I worked at J-PAL full-time for more than a year
I had a terrific PI who was super invested, concerned about my career and my aspirations and HELPED a TON (and continues to help even years later) I don't know a single person who left J-PAL who... doesn't miss J-PAL J-PAL has such great people, it really was an immense privilege to work with a bunch of hopeful, hard working young people The work is intense (if you enjoy the work, perhaps you won't mind not having a social life for 1-2 years), valued and gives you so much to think about/mull over
Some project RAs did basically no work, just sat around waiting for months for directives from their very remote and inaccessible PIs - that can happen at J-PAL Some PIs were very scary and... intimidating to work with and it shows in the mental health of the RAs
I worked at SYC full-time for more than a year
you can try and help people
no valid feedback on performance company doesn't give the employee a chance to implement feedback not a supportive environment to work a real us and them mentality
