Former Intern - Research Assistant

I worked at University of Helsinki for more than a year

Pros

Very good labs to work in Knowledge of English sufficient - don't need to know Finnish or Swedish Bachelor's and Master's students are traditionally paid fairly well for their work

Cons

Big difference in experience between different labs. Some labs are full of wonderful people, others have drama and rude people.

Advice to Management

It might be good to have a more standardized way of handling undergraduate interns and adhering to it more tightly. Additionally, some labs hire non-students to do internships, but I feel that... University of Helsinki students who must complete a research training as part of their studies should be given priority. A better system should also exist for placing students with a lab, as it can be difficult (particularly for non-Finnish students) to find a lab to work in in a timely manner.

Former Employee - Researcher

I worked at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology full-time for more than a year

Pros

You get to do proper research with good colleagues. Some of the teams in the institute really are in the top tier globally. You have a lot of responsibility and freedom, like one would expect in an... academic environment.

Cons

Finnish academic salaries can be a bummer. Some managers manage to bend the rules a bit, but the rules are still there. The top management can be distant, there is little institute-level overview of... what is going on.

Advice to Management

Maybe more updates about how the institute is doing and what are its best achievements per year.
