How are the career development opportunities at Alpha FX?

Pros

After working in several sales jobs in a variety of sectors over the past 12 years, I’ve found that I’ve never experience the personal and professional growth I’ve had since starting with Alpha 2 years ago. There is a great opportunity to live and work in an environment amongst truly elite individuals who inspire you to expect more from yourself with the knowledge and culture to help you achieve it. That being said, it’s been a journey that’s tested me and on reflection, those have been the moments that have been the most rewarding. As Alpha continues to build a fantastic reputation, what’s impressed me the most, is the ability for the company and the people within it to evolve, adapt and learn. This is a testament to the leadership and culture that is at the forefront of Alpha’s DNA

Cons

You need to be open to learn and develop fast in the early months which is non-negotiable and requires real commitment. The benefit of this commitment is that this turns into a habit ultimately leading to real growth!

Advice to Management

Keep a focus on reflecting on the successes and failures Alpha experiences. The humility across the business will help Alpha to thrive as we grow in stature and staff.

What kind of career opportunities exist at Alpha FX?

Pros

-Ability to work in a fast paced environment with a great team - Excellent development and growth opportunities - Hard work pays off mentality - Upper management isn't far removed (CEO and SR Partners are very involved in development) - Opportunity to travel around Canada and Europe -great opportunity for females in finance as it is typically a male dominated industry - had no prior experience in finance or FX and it hasn’t hindered my success

Cons

- with great opportunity comes a lot of pressure. If you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen - start up in Canada (with every start up comes some growing pains)

Advice to Management

-keep addressing growing pains of being a startup while keeping the fun startup vibe

-great opportunity for females in finance as it is typically a male dominated industry

What is the feeling of job security at Alpha FX?

Pros

Having worked at Alpha for a little over a year, the progression and direction that the company has moved in is truly exciting and something that I can say I'm proud to be a part of it. I started as one of five women in a space where I was encouraged to stand up and take control. In just a year, there are now over 20 women in the business, all of whom are independent yet supportive of one another. We have also recently moved offices from WeWork to our own space in a brand new building, which is honestly outstanding. The design is so aesthetically pleasing, having plenty of plants and amenities; it almost represents a hotel more than an office. The handling of problems such as miscommunication is also done remarkably well by the CEO. He addresses things head first and prioritises the happiness and wellbeing of Alpha employees alongside the progression of the business as a whole. Lastly, my colleagues are all people I look up to, respect and whose company I enjoy, considering many of them to also be friends. Coming into work each day to work alongside them is a pleasure.

Cons

The job requires flexibility to ensure you can meet the demands of all the departments: corporate; institutions; Alpha Pay; and Canada. This can involve having to put in extra hours or adopting an adaptable mindset to assist with the growth of specific areas. However, people do always recognise when you go the extra mile and as our team grows, the pressure of this will decrease.

Advice to Management

As the company continues to grow, hands on management will become increasingly important. Although this isn't a threat to the culture, there is a concern that the element of a flat hierarchy could become disrupted, creating a bridge between senior and new employees. I don't doubt the handling of this, but just continue to do what you have so far; maintain an open space where all employees have a voice to the senior management.

How are senior leaders perceived at Alpha FX?

Pros

1) As long as you are bringing value, then it doesn't matter whether you have been in the company 1 week or 5 years, your view will be heard. The structure is very flat. The company emphasises frequently that anyone should feel that they can speak to anyone - be that senior management or a new starter. I haven't felt any of that 'them vs us' mentality that creeps into other working environments: everyone is on the same page and is working and striving for more success. And if it ever feels that that isn't the case, then it's spoken about frankly and people exchange views and solutions are implemented. 2) You will learn so much in such a short space of time that you will end up wishing that you joined earlier on in your career. Some of my colleagues joined AlphaFX as soon as they graduated and they have, in the space of 7 months, achieved what would take someone else in a corporate environment years to achieve. I know this because i've worked at large corporates before and as much as they would say 'we want you to learn and develop', the reality oftentimes is that they just want you to be a cog in a wheel. At AlphaFX, it is the complete opposite: they really, really want you to take ownership of projects and drive them forward, learn new technologies along the way and then share that amongst the team. If you enjoy learning new things, you will enjoy working at Alpha. 3) The team is very competent, hard and smart working and focused. And some colleagues in particular are phenomenally talented. This really forces you to raise your own game and in turn, you become a better developer, stronger communicator and more confident leader. If you apply yourself, listen to feedback and keep working hard to improve then you will earn the right to get more and more opportunities to grow and develop. 4) The work is really interesting. I work longer hours than average but I genuinely enjoy what I do. What we are doing from a tech perspective is really interesting and challenging. It has made me a better developer already in a relatively short space of time and looking at how my other colleagues have grown their careers and knowledge is really inspiring. AlphaFX really see the benefit that the tech team can bring and there isn't that 'sales vs tech' mentality that exists in environments that I have been in before: we are all working together to improve ourselves and Alpha. 5) You will be rewarded if you deliver. I know that this sounds like a cliche but it really is true at AlphaFX! Sometimes, it might seem that some colleagues are a bit intimidating or that the pace is just too fast but it's all for the betterment of the company and also yourself. No-one will guide your hand here the entire time - you just need to apply yourself and have the right attitude and work ethic and, over time, you will start to see the rewards come your way. There is so much opportunity at AlphaFX and that simply doesn't exist at other companies. It really does feel that Alpha is going all the way. It really wants to be the best in the industry and it's a very exciting journey to be on.

Cons

The hours are longer than average but it is worth it.

Advice to Management

The culture is so tight and close: keep repeating the same messages and rewarding hard work so that inertia never creeps in.

The structure is very flat.

How is management perceived at Alpha FX?

Pros

Nice offices, handy to the station, free breakfast and coffee - that’s it !!

Cons

The company believes it owns its employees the standard 5 day week is equivalent to 6 days anywhere else! 8-6 which is a long day, however much more is expected - realistically a 7-7 day is required. The office environment is very stressful as the ethos is not one of a team rather it is to pit employees against each other in an attempt to get them to achieve. There is a blame and fire culture. There is an underlying tone of employees backstabbing about each other. Loyalty to the company is expected but it certainly does not flow the other way. Regularly employees last only days or weeks. This is not restricted to sales but is right across the board including in finance, customer services and compliance. There is poor leadership and management in places which permits favouritism. Criticism of the Alpha way is frowned upon even when you are trying to improve things. Offers its high fliers a share in the company however so many requirements attached not worth anything other than a trick to keep people there. Offers the potential of bonus - that is just a lie! The carrot of a ski trip on offer but unless you are a favourite you haven’t a hope of getting there! Frankly it is a dreadful place to work!

Advice to Management

Sort out your management!

There is poor leadership and management in places which permits favouritism.
