What is health insurance like at Bloomberg L.P.?

Pros

Excellent mobility, great healthcare benefits, global culture, good systems and infrastructure.. all aimed at ensuring you can focus on work.

Cons

There's a thick layer of inexperienced middle management despite fancy titles. Most have been there forever, and have limited or no corporate and professional experience outside of the company. As there are a lot of them, they are unable to grow or learn from each other, instead reinforcing a somewhat immature, weak and incompetent style of leadership. Interestingly, the upper management is much stronger and have solid strategy.. no surprise that most of them are hired from outside the co.

Advice to Management

Mid-level and junior managers need a good relook

Does Bloomberg L.P. offer housing assistance?

Pros

Bloomberg puts effort into giving interesting projects to their engineering interns- lots of ML My mentor was pretty great, and gave me a lot of ownership over my project Mike's portion of the profits (85%) support a large and effective philanthropy organization, and employees are strongly encouraged to volunteer through opportunities and incentives There is a formal process for switching teams, which you are encouraged to do frequently. Additionally, there is a team-matching process for new hires You can work in almost any CS field at Bloomberg, due to their large number of terminal products Engineers put on an impressive overnight puzzle hunt event for interns, with costumes, events, swag, and really well-done puzzles Intern housing is free, and close to Bloomberg Other events include a company picnic (food, rides, etc), two intern parties, day of service, and a bunch of random ones Free admission to effectively any museum for you and your friends

Cons

Intern housing is dorm-style, and inferior to what you would get from other top companies More internal politics than most top tech companies NYC offices do not serve lunch Some teams look pretty boring Most old code is C++, and there are entire teams dedicated to paying down decades of technical debt

Does Bloomberg L.P. offer relocation assistance?

Pros

There are a few really cool teams to work at

Cons

I know only 2-3 good teams out of dozens Most other teams are uninspiring to work for HR is a hit or a big miss (but seems to be the norm in many places) Wild discrepancies in pay for junior positions and the pay is a tier below the big 4 Training is 3 months and soul-crushingly boring The relocation states that you have to return relocation expenses if you leave within 24 months (compared to usual 12). Would rather take cash only than pay some subpar company for relocation twice compared to using AirBnB

Advice to Management

Put in salary bands and reward good employees with raises, rather than paying the minimum required
