What is health insurance like at Crown Castle?

Pros

The Crown B3’s and philosophy is great in theory but means nothing if it isn’t being practiced. There is so much potential to have a great company here. The benefits are pretty good in terms of health insurance and the 6% 401k match. Most of the individuals who are below management are hard working and display the Crown B3’s.

Cons

Morale is low. Employees try to keep a positive attitude but it’s hard when you see corruption everywhere. There is a huge disconnect between the executive team to the directors to the middle managers to the individual contributor employees. The most corrupt area that I’ve witnessed is the middle management area. Most do not display the B3’s and many put on a fake act in front of their higher ups. Many middle managers are too busy trying to get ahead themselves and have no interest in their direct reports except when it comes to taking credit for their work. I’ve witnessed frivolous spending and an abuse of expense reports. Many managers will find “business trips” to go on to expense lavish meals, drinks, etc. I’ve seen some even invite their wives to these trips and meals are getting expensed on Crown’s dime. Middle managers need more oversight. There is a lack of diversity when you go higher up the management chain. Most of the minorities at the company are kept in their worker bee positions and rarely promoted. Management positions are reserved only for a certain group of people. There isn’t much room for career growth unless you know someone higher up and part of the Crown Club.

Advice to Management

Start talking to your employees at all levels instead of just the managers. Of course they’re reporting only positive things about themselves and only the things that make them look good. Look at which managers are putting on a show an bring in real leaders.

The benefits are pretty good in terms of health insurance and the 6% 401k match.

Does Crown Castle offer sponsored degrees?

Pros

The benefits are great. Good healthcare and other core benefits, but in addition there are things like milk stork and tuition reimbursement. Bonus has been consistently over 100% for a number of years, which can’t be said in some other companies I’ve worked for. The vast majority of people are great to work with. Compared to other businesses, there’s far less office politics and generally people are all aligned around a single goal. The work environment is good, if a little structured and hierarchical at times – though that seems to be improving.

Cons

The company has grown fast and struggled to efficiently absorb some of the companies its bought. This has also led to some issues with culture – people who were used to doing whatever they wanted are feeling unhappy with having to behave like a grown-up business.

Advice to Management

Keep communicating. Set the ground rules and remind people what our B3s mean. Let people make a choice about wheter this is a place that they want to work in, and be ok if they decide to see if other pastures are greener. The vast majority of people here love working for Crown, so don’t let an unhappy minority distract from what we’re here to do.

Does Crown Castle offer parental leave?

Pros

Executive leadership is transparent and communicates frequently with employees. There is a vibe from the leaders they genuinely care for the employees. This is a complete 180 from the culture at other telecommunications companies I've worked at. Benefits are great. Gym reimbursement up to $50/month, cell phone up to $100/month, $2000 HSA contribution for families, 10% 401K match when contributing at least 6%, paid maternity and paternity leave, 18 days PTO + 1 floating holiday with additional 5 days PTO every 5 years (not bad, but I gave up 26 days PTO leaving my previous employer after 12 years), and Bonusly recognition program is fantastic and frankly is the only recognition program I've ever seen that truly works.

Cons

Not much, but if I had to pick one it's the anti-work from home policy. While they do allow for flexibility and are reasonable, I do feel there are certain positions which can be just as effective working from home as working in an office. In my case, I feel I would be more effective working from home as I find it distracting being in an office.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and the emphasis on the great culture that's already established. Despite taking a pay cut to come to Crown Castle, I don't regret my decision because the work environment and culture is lightyears ahead of any other company I've worked for.
