Does Dimensional Fund Advisors offer housing assistance?

Pros

Culture is one of the best. They really care about their employees. They pay pretty well for an internship.

Cons

Signing bonuses are better at some other financial firms. Their relocation stipend and housing stipend were pretty much cut entirely for summer interns during covid.

How are the career development opportunities at Dimensional Fund Advisors?

Pros

unlimited bottled water and soft drink, nice looking office and surrounding gardens, great career potential if you can get toxic middle management onside

Cons

The company misleads new employees during the interview process, and the culture of toxic middle management still exists even though the CEOs are making an attempt to combat it. There is a double standard when it comes to promotions and recognition for work, definitely not based on merit but rather how well you suck up to before said toxic middle management.

Advice to Management

You can do all the employee satisfaction surveys you wont but unless you learn to question managers true intention and identify behavior based off personal feelings rather than professional judgement then the culture and success of the firm will not change. There is too many people with influence working for DFA that have a self preservation vs success of the firm mentality

How are promotions handled at Dimensional Fund Advisors?

Pros

Strong line-up of funds with a above average set of clients Work-life balance is good Incredible Food Court that encourages interaction across departments Beautiful Office Space

Cons

Culture here is extremely soft. Focus appears to be on making sure no one gets their feelings hurt, not on rewarding individuals who outperform or outwork those around them. The work itself is extremely simple and compensation is driven by your position; compensation is far below market for talent. No incentive to work harder than those around you exists. Promotions were not based on merit but rather your relationship with various managers that have little to zero actual responsibilities outside of managing employees (very strange). The managers of younger employees were far from top performers among their own peers.

Advice to Management

Embrace capitalism, reward the employees that work hard if you ever want to retain top talent. Current model keeps the below average talent around and pushes away the top talent.
