What is health insurance like at Dow Jones?

Pros

- The Dow Jones Newswires Barcelona office is a good place for early career journalists to get their bearings in business news. Some employees go on to positions at top news organizations (Reuters, AFP, Financial Times, Politico). There is also some opportunities to get features out on WSJ and very occasionally breaking news stories will go into the Journal depending on their “newsworthiness.” - Office culture is relaxed with understanding management who aren’t bossy. They also hire people with calm and empathetic personalities who have been great to work with and hang out with outside of the office. - Benefits package is good, including a company card with €171 euros a month for restaurants, bars and certain delivery apps. There is also a matching pension plan and private health insurance. And journalists get an iPhone and paid phone plan.

Cons

- Don’t expect management to be encouraging or very helpful in gaining you connections with editors across the global newsroom. If you want to get more editing and pursue in-depth stories, you’ll have to take initiative and you often won’t be encouraged to do so. Your general responsibilities can be monotonous and often your content doesn’t go online and gets little play, but does appear in smaller finance platforms (MarketScreener, Morningstar, etc.) and regularly on MarketWatch. - Stories that get picked up by the WSJ often cut out bylines after they are updated by “senior” reporters. - Pay is acceptable for Barcelona but nothing exceptional. Raises come in seemingly inconsequential increments once a financial year. - There is disparity in the work load among reporting teams. The UK desk files more stories than the EMEA team. Smaller specialized teams such as the ESG and economics desks have more flexibility.

Advice to Management

Build stronger connections between editors at different Dow Jones outlets (MarketWatch, Barron’s, Financial News, WSJ, etc.) to better syndicate and pitch Newswires content.

There is also a matching pension plan and private health insurance.

Does Dow Jones offer sponsored degrees?

Pros

I have been with Dow Jones for 5+ years now. My notion of Dow Jones: Heavily invested in career and knowledge growth. They provide training resources for free (Covered by Company), tuition reimbursement, and there is even a mentor program. For individual that are willing to work hard, grow and show that they are a professional, there is opportunity for career advancement. Sorry no free hand outs, you actually have to work for it!!! The Benefits is good in my opinion, with most companies reducing benefit coverage and increasing responsibility to the employee. Dow Jones for the most part has been able to keep the burden to the employee to a minimum. Trust me I've seen a lot worse out there. Hopefully this helps if you are presented with an option to work at Dow Jones.

Cons

Cross Team/Department collaboration can be difficult at times, as it feels like many departments are under staff.

Does Dow Jones have a pension plan?

Pros

Good salary, quarterly bonuses and good pension scheme. 25 days of vacation.

Cons

Legacy processes in place, very difficult to be productive when you have to deal with so many layers of approvals and admin. The legal team is understaffed and overwhelmed, so contracts take a long time to be reviewed. Closing or renewing contracts is a long drawn out process. Organizational changes occur once a year, and some jobs are lost or integrated into new roles.

Advice to Management

Focus on the long term, and instead of frequent major organizational changes, invest in on site training and maintaining loyalty by supporting the existing employees and investing in them-- add to their knowledge base. The vision and values are meaningless if they change every year.

Good salary, quarterly bonuses and good pension scheme.

What kind of career opportunities exist at Dow Jones?

Pros

Great atmosphere and corporate culture. Plenty of employee resources, whatever your needs. Great location by London Bridge.

Cons

London is a satellite HQ to the New York office and that can really be felt at times. Not a lot of room for professional development or career progression in EMEA. A lot of reorgs and restructures that affect junior employees' development.
