What is a typical working day like at GE Power?
Pros
Paid Time Off is super flexible and great. Good money, a lot of overtime extra money. Good experience for entry level/recent graduates. Amazing people and managers at GE Hitachi, willing to help with your career.
Cons
Very "macho" environment with technicians at plants, it tends to be very uncomfortable for women. A lot of travel to towns in the middle of nowhere. So much traveling you cannot keep a daily routine ever. Work during: night shifts, weekends, holidays, 7 days a week and more than 10 hrs a day. Very stressful environment at the plants (not in the office), management in plants tends to be awful, not GE's fault but still something to consider.
Advice to Management
Let people know during interviews what they will be expecting. Not only travel percentages but work conditions, hours, shifts, stress, etc. Help and support new engineers during outages, don't just throw them and expect them to do good in such a complicated and stressful environment.

What is the work environment like at GE Power?
Pros
The technical aspects of the work were engaging, and there were some good people working there. Engineering management did their best to shield their people - you really felt like they would go to bat for you. Integrity and due diligence built into the execution.
Cons
Other types of management and HR held unreasonable amount of power and engineering was treated like a burdensome cost. There was a feeling of massive inertia - anyone with the power to change things was too far away from the need for change to care. There wasn't a lot of direct collaboration between teams, requiring project manager go-betweens, which was inefficient. Worship of metrics rather than actual improvements that the metrics were meant to represent.
Advice to Management
Reduce the vertical structure a bit to reduce corporate inertia. Combine teams and/or have shifts through several collaborative roles, try to break down the "silos". Reduce the power HR had over career opportunities for people they never interacted with.
