How are the career development opportunities at Oberoi Hotels & Resorts?
Pros
1. Guest Focus - You dont learn this better anywhere else. 2. Career Prospects: There is a lot of opportunity for career growth within and outside the organisation if you are working with The Oberoi Group. An employee is assured a promotion of 1 to 2 levels when moving outside the organisation. The OCLD Program is an industry best MT Program. 3. Ethics and Values - Values and ethics are at the core of how business is run. This is consistent at all levels. Everyone talks about Dharma like its the Geeta of Oberoi Group, which it is.
Cons
1. Guest Focus - This is mentioned in the cons as well because there is so much pressure on the employees because of this that management has unrealistic expectations from you to deliver while you are already struggling with staff shortage across hierarchy, constant tech challenges (Systems are almost never working 100%). Employees are only as good to the organisation as long as we are making guests happy. Colleagues who require internal transfers due to medical, family or personal issues are made to wait for years for the same, specially when they are excellent and performing well in their current roles. Employees are expected to be available and respond to calls, official department whatsapp groups even on Off/Leave Days and non shift hours. This impacts the work life balance of all employees leading to frustration. 2. Compensation - Oberoi needs to be an industry leader once again and drive ahead of competition while compensating its employees for their hard work. Assistant level staff is working on salary levels which is not sufficient to lead a life in any of its city properties atleast. There is also no parity between different hotels in different cities because of Minimum Wage laws in each state (Thats right, they would pay almost minimum wages wherever possible). 3. Internal Employee Surveys - The internal surveys in the organization are skewed. I personally know of instances where managers have used techniques to find out which rank or level of employee has had what kind of impact on their overall scores and let it known to the team that, 'They Know!' I know this to be true for atleast resort hotels where size of the teams are relatively small. Favoritism and biased performance appraisals are common. 4. Diversity & Inclusion - All employees of the group need to go under gender sensitization training because of the absolute crap that is filled in their minds. Departments like Kitchen, F&B Service (Back areas) are full of homophobic, misogynistic and vulgar rhetoric and this is Top-Down. When General Manager is known to have commented negatively on LGBTQIA+ People in their morning meetings, it reflects the overall mindset in the hotel too. The Oberoi Group overall has a negative outlook towards the LGBTQIA+ communities where business from this segment is discouraged as that is owner's views in terms of business, they perhaps do not want to 'offend' the patrons. There are many instances of complaints against Executive Chefs and Sous Chefs from female staff where they have been verbally harassed which are not actioned upon. For Instance, a female chef friend of mine was asked to not bet on something because, 'Draupadi ko kapde utarne pade they shart harne pe'. While there is a POSH committee in every hotel, there is almost no official policy on Inclusivity and gender diversity. 5. Mystery Surveys - Know it for a fact that all hotels maintain a list of known LQA auditors and its the job of the training department/ FO Manager to go through the arrivals for the next 7 days and identify possible auditors. This task is achieved almost 90% of times. There is almost no other way for me to report these issues to senior management and hence I have taken this recourse. Its fair game that anyone wanted in should also know about these. Having said that, have met some of the nicest people ever while working in the group and believe in the group's top management.
