What are some insights into the application process at SMA?

Pros

Just joining up now so no real experience with SMA yet other than the application process. It's nice that you can do most of it on line.

Cons

The online experience had quite a few glitches. System sometimes would not accept my input after typing for 10 minutes. A lot of information and background is required. There is no real overview of the application process and how it is supposed to work. You just have to jump in and figure it out as you go along.

Advice to Management

Provide an overview / or guidance as to the application process. Work on the website to make it more robust - got lots of error messages after typing for 10 minutes and work could not be saved. Perhaps create a drafts folder where work can be saved and then uploaded once connectivity issues are resolved. Need an overview presentation on the application process. Need guidance on how the different categories in the application apply to the resume. For instance, the fact that Deployment Roles form the initial narrative of the Resume.

How was the interview at SMA?

Pros

None that I know of.

Cons

The interview process was very in-depth and required me to create a detailed profile of projects I worked on in the past. Altogether it took about 40 hours of my time. I was offered a job as a contract employee at an impressive salary. I was told they would only pay me for jobs I was assigned to. I went through the on-boarding process and attended new employee orientation and weekly staff meetings. It's been 2 years since they offered me the job, and not once have they given me a contract to work on. I've expressed interest in working on particular projects and explained how my experience would be beneficial. But I never got a single job. They pursued me for this job and I was excited initially, but now I just wonder why they wasted my time.

Advice to Management

Don't hire people as contractors if their experience doesn't match your typical projects. Don't send someone an offer letter and put them through orientation etc. if you have no intention to ever give them paying work.
