How are senior leaders perceived at Seagen?

Pros

Company is trying to become better and more diversified. CEO is very passionate and committed to the company.

Cons

1. Most people have only been working for Seattle Genetics their entire career and have little experiences of doing things differently. Overall the company is resistant to make changes as they hold on tight the old SeaGen way of doing things. 2. Unnecessary complicated governance and operation processes slow things down. Lots of time wasted to generate slides and presentations rathan than focusing on real work and deliverables. Decisions were made by very few people while senior management don’t seem to have an open channel for feedbacks. 3. Company is heavily focused on bottom line and have no time for real people development. there is relatively little respect for employees. Toxic and aggressive behaviors are tolerated in many teams by senior management.

Advice to Management

The SeaGen way is not necessarily the best and the only way. Time to have a wake up call to shape up the senior management team. Simplify the operation management and processes.

CEO is very passionate and committed to the company.

Does there seem to be diversity at Seagen?

Pros

Impressive CEO! Wonderful commitment to patients and science. So much potential to be a great company.

Cons

Location - not in Seattle, not even close. Unless you live close to Bothell campus, traffic is really bad. Car-dependent campus. Benefits - if you are coming to SeaGen from out of state biopharma, the salary and benefits may be rather disappointing. You will be surprised by the outdated IT systems, business processes and HR policies. The campus is large, but has no cafeteria and no gym. Management has the type of flexible work policies I remember from a decade ago. Culture - be prepared for the 'Seattle freeze' - noticeably more introverted, measured, diffident staff. I worked for months without some colleagues in my department saying hello or good morning if we crossed paths. Once you get to know folks, they are often earnest, polite and thoughtful. Buddies could take a while. Gregarious personalities will struggle a bit more to fit in. The management in my department excelled at blaming, shunning, gas-lighting. I was advised to keep my head down and stay under the radar as much as possible. I observed a number of smart people get treated very badly. Not a lot of biotech options in the area, so personnel are more anxious about keeping their job- even if the pay and management are not the best. Lots of examples of (sometimes wildly) unprofessional behavior. Does not have the ethnic and cultural diversity of the big biotech hubs.
