Does United Way offer sponsored degrees?

Pros

- Good PTO (I think 5 weeks starting out, up to 7) - All benefits fully paid (health, dental, vision), match up to 6% for 401k - I don't know if they still do, but they offered a tuition program up to $5k if it was aligned with your responsibilities. One coworker was able to get toastmasters through it. - Good people with good intentions, a lot of motivated professionals

Cons

- Overly concerned about attire (some guests/visitors shared that it felt like a fashion show) - Feeling of inequity between departments (downstairs vs upstairs, development vs programs). - Slow and unclear decision-making protocols; you may get approval for something from location/person a only to realize - Pay was pretty low - high employee turnover - Regardless of workload, overtime wasn't allowed (even though many people did).

Advice to Management

Pay more equitably and provide more opportunity for agency and decision-making across the organization instead of just concentrated at the top. Consider levels of positions and representation across organization (Eg; does a 5 person department need a VP, and two directors, to manage only two other employees, while other departments managing much higher quantities have no higher representation).

I don't know if they still do, but they offered a tuition program up to $5k if it was aligned with your responsibilities.

What is the retirement plan like at United Way?

Pros

Some of the best people work at United Way which makes the job very enjoyable. A lot of hardworking individuals ready to make social change. They offer competitive benefits and have a great 401(k) match. Flexible schedules as well.

Cons

In my years at the SLC United Way the leadership lacked the whole time. They do not want you to grow professionally. I've had former coworkers hired for one position, and years into that position express interest in moving up or changing positions only to be pushed out by management. The top protects the top, and only the top gets those big promotions. They aren't transparent with the work they are doing and how much money they are actually spending on 'big projects.' Sometimes they need to slow down and figure out how to fix a problem with the tools they have rather than jump into the next multi-million dollar project to fix another problem.

Advice to Management

Invest in your employees. Show you care and you're on the same team rather than treat them as the enemy. This could help with the ridiculously high turn over rate.

They offer competitive benefits and have a great 401(k) match.

How are senior leaders perceived at United Way?

Pros

- Working alongside passionate individuals who are fighting to create a better city for everyone - Work/life balance

Cons

- The Calgary top leadership isn't great, their personal insecurities get in the way of the organization doing great things to move forward. There's a lack of trust and respect from the CEO to the rest of the employees, including the VPs. Employees are generally disheartened about the poor leadership and whether it can take the organization where it needs to go. Many people are leaving because of this.

Advice to Management

- Your employees bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise. Listen to them. - Please invest in professional development. The organization shouldn't have to suffer because of a leader's personal insecurities and lack of trust.
