Data and Policy Analyst - Statistical Programmer Interview

      24 Dec 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Acumen (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2018

      Interview

The interview process is divided into 2 or 3 stages depending on where you want to count from. It starts with a data analysis exercise to do for 2 hours, followed by a phone interview based on the exercise. Past that stage, successfully, an interview at the HQ is scheduled in which you are drilled by 3 interviewers after a written test. Make sure to study your probability basics and refresh some formulas in your memory. The data analysis exercise is not hard if you've been doing basic data analyses. Make sure to get your statistical assumptions right. The face to face interview could go in any direction, with some interviewers wanting to be very technical and others just wanting to know that you've some experience.

      Question 1

You'll ALWAYS be asked whether you've done a project with data analysis and to talk about what you did.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Acumen in Aug 2023

      Interview

Initially, I submitted application material including resume, cover letter, coding sample and answers to some application questions. After a few weeks they sent me a data analysis exercise and asked me to submit within a week. Then they scheduled a phone interview a week later. I thought I did pretty well in the interview which was a few days ago, but they sent me the rejection email today. I am shocked to learn that they are not able to offer me the position because I genuinely believed that I had the potential to perform at a high level in this role. I really liked this role so I am very disappointed. For the first time in my life I shed tears after being rejected by a company. I wish I could get another chance to prove my worth. The interviewer clearly didn't realize my potential.

      Question 1

Just some questions related to the data analysis exercise and how I would approach the problem

      Declined offer

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Acumen in Aug 2022

      Interview

After sending in my application, I received an email from them about a month later asking me to do an exercise for them. Completing this exercise did not guarantee me an interview. The purpose of the exercise was to gauge my thinking process for answering a data analytics question, like what x variables might be causing an increase in this y variable, so it wasn't difficult and you could just use Excel. For my exercise though, the instructions were very unclear, so I answered the question based on how I interpreted it, which apparently was wrong. Thankfully though, I was still asked to interview and got the chance to explain how I interpreted the question, so the interviewer understood why I did my analysis the way I did. It took another month to hear back and receive an offer from them.
