Difference between a hardlink and softlink in Linux file

  system?

Softlink – creates a pointer to the file, similar to “create shortcut” in MS Windows
Hardlink – creates a mirror-copy of the file, shares the inode with the original file

Deleting the original file means that the softlink will point to nowhere, whereas the hardlink will preserve the file data
