      Territory Manager Interview

      28 Jul 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Reynolds American (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2018

      Interview

I first had a phone interview that was around 30 minutes, this is mainly going over your resume. After that, I got an email stating that I was still being considered for the position. I then got a phone call a week later asking me to fill out the virtual assessment. This really was basic psychological questions and situational questions that might come up while in the field. After passing that, I got a phone call the next day saying I made it to the panel interview and the next one was in a Chicago that next Friday. I was told I would be flown out and they would provide a hotel stay and I would be reimbursed for two meals. I was also told my recruiter would be calling to set up a “coaching call” and to go over their leadership dimensions and how to answer questions in the STAR format. The coaching call was pretty silly, she pretty much asked me to update my resume and to make sure to ask questions and shake their hands and look them in the eye (common sense interview practices). I then got a phone call to set up my hotel and flight info and the guy on the phone asked me to drive because I was “3 and half hours away” and that’s i would be compensated 51 cents per mile. I didn’t want to object because I was really interested in the job so I agreed to drive. I went to the panel and was 30 minutes early, I had written out responses for various different leadership questions I felt that I would be asked, so i went over them. I had also memorized the history, what each department does, the CEOs, and all of their mission statements. I also memorized all the prominent information that is happening on their various brand websites, such as sweepstakes, mobile offers, community projects etc. (that was definitely not needed). The panel is in two rooms with two different executives in each room. Each room focuses on three of the leadership dimensions. In between they send you to a neutral room to regroup for a second. In my first room, I answered every question clear and concise and was very conversational, however after answering their questions and asking mine, there was about 15 minutes left and they told me to head back to the neutral room. In the second room, I stayed the full time and thought I had built great rapport. They said I would hear back from someone on Monday and would receive a phone call if I was being offered a position or an email if not. I ended up getting a very bubbly phone call that Tuesday at the end of the day saying they were pursuing other candidates and they would not be moving forward with me at this time. Needless to say, I was a bit shocked. I then tried to send in my expense report to the email they provided and it came back saying that email was restricted and that I was unauthorized to send anything to that address. At that point m, I emailed my recruiter stating the problem and also asking for feedback as to what I did wrong. She said she would take care of the if the expense report and that they are not authorized to give personal feedback but I could reapply in 6 months which should give me a chance to gain more experience and to research the company and prepare more STAR worthy answers. (I had prepared and researched for about three weeks). At this point, I really don’t know what they are looking for, but apparently it is not me. I will not be reapplying.
