      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      27 May 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Vouch Insurance in Apr 2020

      Interview

Initial phone screen with a recruiter, then a conversation with the hiring manager for the role, then a techincal screen with some of the engineers to talk through design choices, and finally an on-site interview (virtually due to covid) for about 4-5 hours, plus a final call with one of the founders. Overall the process was nice, no trick questions, but just an honest attempt at getting to understand my skill-set, background, and what I'm interested in. Pretty smooth process all around.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Interview

This was one of the most unprofessional interview experiences I've ever had in my career. Vouch's process consists of a recruiter call, a manager zoom call, a coding challenge, and then a 4 hour onsite. The manager call, the code screen, and the coding portion of the final round were all straightfoward, and the engineers that conducted them seemed nice, intelligent, and communicated well. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the rest of my interviewers. The product person interviewing me for the onsite product round showed up over 5 minutes late to the interview, and seemed like he was taking the call from his desk at the office. I could hear noise in the background and see people moving around behind the blur, and their was an echo that I mentioned to him but that he never went into another room to get rid of. It seemed like his first time interviewing, because he would ask me a question, and then ask if i had any questions, and then look at his notes about what to ask me next, seeming like he wasn't sure what to do. Following the product round, I had an architecture review, in which my interview was more than 15 minutes late. Apparently there was a production issue she had to take care of, but it was still very unprofessional. We had to rush through this round because of her lateness. The round after was with an engineering director, who seemed extremely tired and disinterested in the whole interview, and he asked me questions that weren't relevant for the position I was interviewing for, or to any roles I had held i.e. "Tell me about how you have put together the teams you've led", "tell me about how you like to prepare for a planning Agile ceremony for your team" when I haven't put together any of the teams I've led, or held a management position, or put together and led planning meetings - and the job description for the senior role didn't request any management experience. I received a call from the recruiter a few days after the interview telling me they chose not to move forward, because of feedback i had received in the round where my interviewer was 15 minutes late, and because I hadn't led large enough projects...even though they never asked me to describe a large project I had led lmao. Overall, was very silly, disorganized process and a huge waste of time for both the candidate and the company. If you are trying to attract quality candidates to your company, you should do better.
