I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at West Midlands Combined Authority in Jul 2021
Interview
I was sent a task unexpectedly by email the night before the interview and asked to join the interview 15 minutes later to complete the task (In reality, the task was at least a couple of hours work, so this showed that it wasn't particularly well planned).
The interviewers were nice and friendly.
Only three questions were asked, all with a knowledge-based focus.
One interviewer asked "So, where are you working at the moment?" and hadn't looked at my experience and therefore I found myself trying to talk through my experience and scenarios despite the questions not allowing for this.
One interviewer questioned why I generally spent fewer than 4 years with any business. I explained that I spend much of my time transforming and establishing something new so that it can be handed over to someone to run as BAU, they didn't like this, but this position was a two-year contract.
Overall, I was surprised on a few counts:
Poor questions for a senior role do not allow the candidate to showcase the skills or experience that would be required.
Lack of clarity around questioning which didn't align to the job description.
The focus around knowledge of WMCA and subcontractors (if only I googled it within the interview) rather than demonstrating skills and behaviors.
I think that interviewers could do with having a selection of competency-based questions and positive/negative indicators prepared to ensure clarity and allow candidates to shine.
