There are 28 similar (meaning one cannot distinguish one from the other in any way just/simply by seeing or touching) coins, out of which 1 is slightly heavier than the rest (meaning that the weight of each of the remaining 27 coins is the same). Find the heavier coin in minimum no. of iterations. When I asked, "Is that it, sir?", the interviewer replied that I could use a weighing machine. When I asked, "Which weighing machine to use, sir... Digital or Beam/Physical?", he replied that I could use any.2 Answers1. Using a beam/physical balance: Divide the 28 coins into 9, 9, 9 & 1. Put 1 set of 9 coins on one plate of the balance & another set of 9 coins on the other plate of the balance. If it balances, put the 3rd set of 9 coins on any of the 2 plates after removing that plate's set of 9 coins. If it balances, the 1 that we left alone is the faulty one. If in any case, there is an imbalance between any 2 sets of 9 coins, choose that set of 9 coins which is heavier & divide it into 3, 3 & 3. Now, try to balance. One set of 3 coins will be heavier. Divide that into 1, 1 & 1. Now, you can do the last step by yourself if you have understood it clearly. N.B. : Best Case (2 iterations) & Worst Case (5 iterations). 2. Using a digital weighing machine: Divide the 28 coins into 2 equal halves. Put 1 set of 14 coins on the machine and record the weight. If the weight is divisible by 14, then the other set of 14 coins harbour the heavier coin (since the weight of 14 identical coins = 14 x (weight of 1 coin)). Divide that set of 14 coins into 2 equal halves & weigh 1 set of 7 coins. Now again, record the weight & see whether it is of the form 7 x W or not. Keep on repeating this procedure till you find the heavier one.4

The job profile of a Associate Consultant at the Bangalore office is mostly gathering data from key decision makers, so the interview panel simulated a telephonic call with a brand manager of an FMCG major. And then they pretended that they wouldn't be able to give me that data, and I had to reason with them to obtain the data.1 AnswerHi can you share with me the kind of questions you received via excel sheet. your reply can be very very helpful.
