It depends on what you mean by "most efficient" (turnaround time? detection limit? throughput? ease of use?). There are many methods that provide a presumptive Salmonella result in the Health Canada Compendium, but each must be confirmed via MFHPB-20. Our lab has 6 Health Canada Salmonella methods on the scope of accreditation and each has plus and deltas associated with it. Whether using bioMerieux VIDAS (MFLP-40, MFLP-49), 3M MDS (MFLP-06), Bio-Rad CFX (MFLP-38), Hygiena BAX (MFLP-29), they all have very similar turnaround times and detection limits. There are variations in instrument costs and footprints. They are all relatively easy to learn. Different staff have different preferences among them. At our lab it comes down to cost and relationship with the vendors. There is no right answer to this question. My recommendation would be to collect CTQ's and create a CSM to identify which instrument best suits your lab's specific needs, resources, and budget. Apologies that this answer is not definitive.
