Why do you want to be a Spanish instructor?

1 Answers

I love languages and love teaching them.

- Are you familiar with the Berlitz method? - Do you have experience teaching? - How would you combine your academic/professional background with your lessons? - Questions about your communication ability/experience working with people.

I had no teaching/managing experience, was not familiar at all with the Berlitz method and still got hired because of my academic background and my performance during and after training. So these questions are more to determine how able are you to adapt to the Berlitz method than to write you off completely if you have no teaching experience. Less

Skype interview: Tell us about your teaching experience and background. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What information have you learned from your students' course evaluations? Why are you interested in this position?

1 Answers

When I arrived for my in-person visit, the hiring chair told me that she distinctly remembered how I answered the question "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I had told the panel that my life so far has been a couple years here, a few years there. I was ready for stability and community. The hiring chair told me that other candidates had answered "I want to get my PhD and gain teaching experience at different institutions." This was a no-no! They want someone who will stay a while, who isn't overly ambitious, who is simply interested in instructing language courses. I also found that the community within the faculty was very strong, and that's why I feel that emphasizing my desire to be part of a community was so well-received. Less
