I guess my question back to the interviewer would be, what do you mean by "#1 employee"? On what scale? That said, I would probably choose to be well-respected over being the top dog.

I can hardly envision a company or a scenario where a person disliked by his or her co-workers would be the Number 1 employee. Organizations require relationships to achieve results. It would have to be a place where everyone worked independently of each other for this scenario to happen.

#1 v. #14 matters based on the size of the company. In really large companies, #14 is still impressive. More important though, I am ok with people disliking me if they respect me.

I'd definitely be #15 with people who like you... there's room for growth - you can always strive for and move to the #1 position. However, being #1 with people who don't like you makes for a stressful work environment - and once someone doesn't like you (especially a group) it's very hard to change their minds.

You cannot be the #1 employee if everyone dislikes you. I've been at this company, and that high productivity employee that everyone hates destroys 10x more morale from their co-workers than they produce in raw output. Morale is correlated strongly with productivity, thus they are actually a burden on the company. They should be let go so the rest of the people can scale up their work without that egotistical "#1 employee" around.

#15, people like you and you have room for growth and a clear path to greater success. Don't ask the interviewer what they mean on this question, this one has an obvious answer.

The way to answer this would be state it can't exist either way. There is now way to ensure that everyone likes or dislikes you. They would be to achieve the highest possible rank through dedication, persistence, hard work, and teamwork. Your respect from others at work is more important than having someone like you. But to become a leader... some people have to like you, for them to follow.

Be number 15. People who like you will support you and you can then be #uno!!! Being a disliked #1 is an oxymoron, no pun intended.

Obviously neither b/c both things can't both be true. In an interview if some one gives you an either or question generally I don't give either of the options.

I'd rather be #2. I try harder and probably have at least one or two people in the Dept. who like me, other than my manager.

If being #1 means making $100 million a year, I'll take that. But if being #1 and being #15 is not much different, then it depends on the size of the company. In a 15 person company, I'd rather be #1 than #15. In a 15,000 person company, I'd choose #15.

#15. There's no downside. Since the question doesn't say that how good you are at your job changes between the two scenarios, it can be said that the only differences between the two are (A) whether or not your coworkers like you, and (B) whether or not you get to work with people better than you. Working with a higher caliber of people is best both for your personal growth and for the growth of the company, so the second option is superior.

I think it is # 1 employee in one particular department. I would be happy with #1, as people may be unhappy because of many reasons, one being Jealous. Not only that would't number 1 make you happy, proud? Do what makes you happy, everything else will fall in place. GBAD: how can being #1 destroy your productivity? The very fact that you are #1 speaks for your self.

I would like to be #15, still if it be the last position. I'm sure to get #1 position with my dedication, performance, hard work, in such a way, everyone will be happy with me. No. 1 does not mean just a rank, it is to be one so that other employees idealize you, and this way we will increase our organization productivity.

For me it depends upon the work culture in the company and how my peers are. If my peers want to be in top position regardless of others dislike, I would do the same.

I would prefer #15. It has an obvious answer to my way of thinking. These have been helpful to read a bunch of questions that appear nonsensical on the surface. Before I read a few of them, I would have attacked the question like many here have done. I can see how the interviewer would like for you to consider the question, which is keeping in the spirit of what is being asked, not pick apart the question itself. It reminds me of a group brainstorming ideas to a complex question.

I agree on some level with the people who say it is important to get along with your coworkers to get things done. But on the other hand, I wonder WHY is a low ranked employee more liked? If he is more liked because he tells the funniest jokes and parties constantly, then I don't really want that for myself. I want a job that I can excel at. That doesn't mean I'm going to be rude, but if I have to not care about my work to be liked then it's not worth it.

The company whose top employee is disliked by everyone for whatever reason(s) is definitely not a company I'd like to work for.

In order to be #1 one of my requirements would be that I was well-liked. In other words, being well liked and #1 go hand in hand-ie its not possible to be #1 the way I define it, if you are disliked by all. However, I'll choose being the disliked Chief over being the well-liked Indian every time. , if my choices are limited to the way you phrased the question.

I would actually respond with, "I would rather be #8. I envision being hated by some and liked by many so therefore I would come in to do what is requested of me, contribute as best as possible, and also try to excel at all I am doing. I know that some will feel that I am going after their jobs and in turn will hate me, but some will see the great job I will be doing and will love me. So in turn #8 is where I would place myself and I wouldn't limit myself to such extremes."

Personally, I don't care if no one likes me. If my boss loves me and thinks I'm doing an excellent job, why does it matter what people at my level or below me think? Of course, it would depend on where you worked. For example, if you're a teacher that does a good job but is hated by all of your students, that would be bad. This question makes me think of an analogy that someone gave me: Picture two kids. One is on the floor, and one is on the top of a desk. Ask the one on the desk to pull the other one up with him, and they probably can't. But ask the one on the floor to pull the other down with him, he can do it easily. Point: It would be much easier to go from number one down if your coworkers hated you than it would be to maintain or go up from number 15. Still, if I am in a position where my coworkers feelings have nothing to do with what my boss thinks of me, I would choose to be number one.

I would much prefer to be respected than liked. If you are #1 you will have more information and therefore a clearer picture of the best direction for the company. People may hate your decisions now but in time by driving to the goal, the company, shareholders and all employees will be better off. Once you succeed you'll have more "friends" than you know what do with. Plus if everyone hates you now it's very easy to build significant improvements. Get one person to like you and that is a huge % jump in your "likeability".

It all depends on the role you are recruited to play. If team work is of importance, then #15 is the option. if team work is not a requirement, then #1 would be an option because initially majority of people work for the money and later comes esteem needs. So the question back to the interviewer, "Is team work important for this position?".

Say if Amazon has approx. 20,000 employees in its Seattle office then I would like to be #15 employee and have all your coworkers like me. As only 14 employees be ahead me whereas I'll be above rest 19,985 employees and dear to all. This will increase my productivity and hard work that soon i'll reach #1.... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So is the question a conundrum or a fallacy?

I know this is not an option here, but I would like none of those. Rather i would like to be respected for my actions and decision that I take. Being liked or disliked with co-worker might make one biased or hesitant about one's action and might put one self before the taking the right decision.

Seems like an easy game, but thinking about it really depends on the quality of question one asks themselves! Consider this, being #1 is definitely what anyone wants (mainly because the sense of reward for being n.1 is attractive $$$), but deciding on being hated or loved hugely depends on the social needs of one, according to Maslow's theory these needs (the need for love and appreciation) must be achieved to gain real fulfillment in life.

I've been in the position where I was top employee and was hated by everyone. While it does make the job near impossible, whether this is good or not depends on the job. I was hated in the position I was in by most because I followed the rules and reminded (quite regularly) the others in the group to do the same. If this was the scenario, I'd gladly do it again. However, as has been explained to me, in the actual work force, it's near impossible to get anywhere unless your co-workers like you to some degree. Therefore, I'd prefer to be liked than to be number one.

It depends. More information is needed in the question. If a person is working in a commission environment, most of the time a salesperson wants and needs to be number one, and is expected to be so. Ethics must be adhered to, common courtesy extended. Most employers do not generally get involved with piranha type tactics on the sales floor. They are generally more interested in sales results, period. In a commissioned retail environment, the sales floor is akin to a battlefield.In order to be number one in sales one must be aggressive and persistent. Without corporate parameters sales people can and usually over step the boundaries if gone unchecked. Many top echelon sales people are often despised by other sales associates. One who is exposed to this environment will need to personally decide if they want to be liked by their peers or liked by their employers who are generally result driven. It boils down to one's personal credo and beliefs. To some a larger paycheck far outweighs the being liked factor. Usually, the corporate philosophy, although unwritten will set the tone and thus the behavior of the associates.

A minor pay difference is hardly worth making work unenjoyable. I see more value in relationships than in pure monetary value.

I will choose to be number 1 because love and hate not depend on you, but respect is a must in either situation which is more important than love, and love depends on personal preferences which are something out of your own control, so we have to focus on what's on our control rather than draining our energy on becoming loveable, finally, no guarantee that you will be lovable if you are # 15 or # 1000 , so be yourself and everything will be in place.

I agree with Dave. This is an interview killer. I would not want to work for a manager who is blatantly narcissistic and likes to play games, and would waste my time like this.

Bud I have to disagree. Depending on the position you are interviewing for, this could reveal alot about how you would perform in the job when placed on the spot. Think about it. How likely is it that as a professional, you could be left in a room with a client while the presenter steps out for 5 minutes, You have to keep them entertained so they stay interested in your company.

Clients aren't 8 year olds with ADD. There is no situation in a real life working environment (aside from entertainment) where you have to talk for 5 minutes just to entertain somebody. If a presenter has to step out for 5 minutes, you lost the client's business already. If it was an emergency, the best thing to do is to communicate that fact. Most clients will simply go to their blackberrys to sort through the emails that they missed on the way to your office. Unless you're interviewing for a position as a court jester, this is a silly question and it would be a dealbreaker for me.

Unless you're interviewing to do nightly improv comedy there's no reason for this question. You can see a person's fun loving personality and likability in the interview. The manager has a real childish ego; it's best to avoid that. You're there to do a job not boost his nonexistent self-esteem. "What am I a monkey?"

I actually tend to agree with Paula somwhat. This question is for a Leaderhip Development Program Associate. I would think that the person in this role will have to present to large groups quite often and make it entertaining. saying "thanks for your time" just means you are a quitter and probably not a good fit anyway. 5 minutes isn't a long time. Many people read this question and right way think it is dumb. Maybe the question actually asks for you to be engaging.

Used to work with a guy who did something like this to newbies who were interviewing at the company. But he didn't tell them what he was doing. He'd just stare them down. He said he was waiting for them to, "Get interactive." In other words, he wanted them to start the conversation. I told him he was being a bully and to knock it off. But if someone did this to me I'd either go with Jay's suggestion or begin reciting poetry or perhaps sing a few tunes by Tom Lehrer. :-)

You may all be correct. It depends upon the interviewer. Is the person being a complete ass, or do they actually want to ascertain your response, perhaps to see how you will fit in with the firm. While it might not be my response, my first thought would be, "will I be your boss or your subordinate?"

This can come off as a childish encounter with a narcissist and probably both are true, usually either newbie managers or managers who are bored with their jobs and really don't care who works there. However, depending upon how badly you want a job....This could be a great opportunity to say, "Oh good, you are looking for autonomy and leadership. Both of which I am good at and look forward to one day taking a position much like the one you are in."

In certain management position, you will encounter people who refuse to cooperate, plain stubborn or just a pain to work with... since you are holding a higher position, they simply give the "I don't care; but I will give you time to breath your thoughts" - EXACTLY what this question is pushing across. I would say, you need to talk and get the interviewer to open up. Think of something creative or something (nice of course) that will provoke a response - family, friday's game, super bowl etc... if you want the job or pass the interview.

Wow, I can't believe the narcissistic response I see here. Lighten up, its an interview, not a power play. They are trying to get to know you, and you guys are assuming all these negative things out of it. With that attitude, you affect those around you and in no doubt, you will carry that to the work place. This question is to filter those people out. I would start telling them about my living experiences throughout the United States and South America, and some of my adventures. They would be totally fascinated by all the people and diversified experiences I have had, and the 5 minutes would be way too short.

I know of a coworker that used this question because she didn't really want to be a part of the interviewing process and used it just to burn time.

If you can't spend FIVE minutes talking about this company (you HAVE done your research, right?) and why you think they have a compelling vision and exactly how you think your unique skills and capabilities can contribute to that vision, you are clearly not the type of person I'd want to hire. A question like this is a gift! (And apparently very effective, as it would have quickly weeded out about 30 of you!)

Yes - it's rather insulting to be put on the spot, with a question of this nature, it's MEANT to cause a reaction, and to see if you go off, or if you can extrapolate from the question and take charge. They also want to see how you react socially, as leadership roles are expected to make appearances, and put up with all kinds of ridiculous questions, which can contain important subtexts. Can you roll with the punches? Do you take offense easily? This is a LEADERSHIP question - start leading! Entertain - give him something to think about! You're given full control of the situation, and he won't even interrupt you! Imagine you've got a room full of people and you're holding the microphone. It's the same thing, just fewer people. The trick is to come of as a presenter, not as a comedian.

Make yourself look as good as you can! Duh! even if the interviewer is just bored or being a jerk or whatever, why wouldn't you sell yourself? THAT'S WHAT YOU DO IN AN INTERVIEW ANYWAYS! For everyone who wouldn't take advantage of this, thats like saying "I don't want to have to prove to you that I can do this job" which is basically the worst thing you could imply in an interview.

This is, in itself, a test on your communication skills. It is essential that you do not look stupid, or hesitate with your answer. Focus on things that you love to do and find interesting. Mostly vacations will provide you with the best feeding ground. A great amusement park, a trip through the national parks, a boat cruise, camping trips, the Smithsonian, etc. The key is to use lots of detail, and make them believe that it was lots of fun. And make sure that you smile, and look them in the eyes as you are doing it. Lastly, watch the clock. Time is important. Do not talk about family life or gardening.

Ok then I'll force you to talk and laugh within 2 minutes by any means.....Thats what I can do and if I'm successful in that you gonna hire me without any further questioning or interview process...DEAL I think this should be your motto (reflecting you are ready to take any challenge or face any situation full-heartedly anytime) in such kind of a questions..

Is New York the city, the state, or another municipality that happens to also be called New York, such as New York, Texas. Are we talking about windows on a building, or will it also include car windows, store shelf windows, or maybe even MS Windows licenses. After the information is clarified, it's time to analyze. Estimating the population and estimate an average number of windows per person is one approach, but it may seem too general. Another approach can be divide and conquer. Estimate the number of residential houses, estimate the number of offices, and number of vehicles, etc, and multiply by an average number for each type of structure. Round the number to the nearest million or tenth of million to make it easy to remember for the client.

If you are going to estimate correctly, you need to come up with a range. A single point estimate is pretty much guaranteed to be wrong. No matter which approach you take (average building floors by average number of windows, people * number of windows, etc), at best you get a midpoint of a range. The question is how wide does the range need to be? At this point, with little information, you need a pretty wide estimate (in the million window + range).

Are you talking about glass pained windows? Do double pained windows count as two or only one. Should I include MS Windows? What about the number of windows the average person has open at any one time? Which version of MS Windows? Are we talking both server and desktop versions of Windows? I know the answers to all of these questions, but I need to know which ones you want included in the answer. Then (if you have some paper) write some numbers down, do some calculations and give them an answer of some big number that is based on the calculations you made. What size is your window dimensions ? Large commercial could equal 4 residential size windows. Do you consider single pane or double glass as still one window ? What about glass block windows, do they count ? Like Carl Segan used to say, billions and billions...

When I think about this question I would want to simplify the categories into Residence windows and Business windows (other types exist but this should cover a large majority of standard construction windows). Starting with residency, I'll assume ~15M New York population, with roughly 80% in apartments and 20% in homes. Of the apartments I'd go with an average occupancy of 2, and home of 3. Then thinking about how many windows are in typical rooms in each residency (bedroom, dining, kitchen etc.) I came up with 14 windows in homes and 5 in apartments. Multiplying the numbers correctly I came up with 30M apartment windows and 14M home windows. Then for business windows, I decided that an appropriate number would be 80% of population is working, 20% with their own office which has one window. The other people are in shared work spaces, which I will assume on average have half as many windows as people. When multiplying these correctly I got 7.2M business windows. Total I ended up at 51.2 M windows.

Once you answer that, be prepared for “what about busses?!” 100k busses in nyc, 12 Windows each. “What about cars!?” 1/4 of NYC owns cars, that’s probably 4 million or so people, cars have 6 windows, math it out friends.

Additionally, individuals less able to question their beliefs and assumptions about something (i.e. choose to remain ignorant, continue a prejudice, etc.) have been found to be less able to deal with change. This translates into the work environment in the following ways: - Training becomes more difficult - Changes in office practices (eg a move from set desks to "hot-desking" are rejected (despite longitudinal [i.e. studies over time] evidence indicating it is better), and can actually be a bit traumatic for people not able to accept change. - New technology less likely to be accepted. --> Basically, individuals are more difficult to train (or reject training), less likely to try to upskill, and do not sit well with the natural changes that would occur in an org over time. Sorry for the complex answer! :P

I spend my time driving to plan my day or recap my day depending on the time. I also rehearse conversations I anticipate may be difficult and try to anticipate responses. On really long drives, I'll listen to books on Audible or practice my Portuguese with language tapes. But if the weather's good, and I'm in the right mood, I'll just open the sunroof and blast Hendrix or he Clash and sing along.
