I worked at Comcast full-time (More than 5 years)
Pros
- Despite corporate reputation, the company treats employees well
- If you land in a good spot, learning opportunities are limitless and you're surrounded by smart people
- Company makes internal transfers easy
- Work flexibility (WFH, hours, etc) are remarkable (in the right org)
- Technology is bleeding edge, despite the behemoth nature of the tech landscape
- Smart people are everywhere, and its easy to forget amidst the daily challenges
- Excellent immigration support
- Great benefits (virtually free cable/internet/phone), solid 401k match, good ESPP, and excellent discount programs that can save over $5k per year on regular expenses
Cons
- Company is generally stingy when it comes to pay packages. This is changing, but older teams tend to haggle a lot
- Between a mix of smart, average and terrible people (employees+Contractors), one tends to get lost in the minor battles that can overshadow the larger goal of making the most of a company with unlimited resources.
- Middle Leadership - Many many questionable leadership appointments. Good people arent always good leaders. The loudest and noisiest arent always effective
- Given a large organization, anything outside of the tech shops is not a great place to be.
- Some facilities tend to be poorly maintained and crowded
Advice to Management
1 - Appointing confrontational folks to leadership positions is dangerous. While temporarily effective, it sows seeds of permanent damage to organizational values
2 - Suffocating people with work, especially when earnings are consistently good, is bad business practice
3 - Teach leaders to recognize leadership as a responsibility, not a privilege. Younger folks starting out in their careers soak up everything around them, including bad habits perpetuated by bad leaders
4 - The new focus on customers is good, but barely enough. The piecemeal solutions are responsible for Comcast's poor reputation, and the current strategy is not aggressive enough
5 - Hire younger folks more aggressively and incubate a learning environment. Rotational programs that allow young professionals to spend 6 months in different parts of the business can create astonishingly good leaders
6 - Continue to expand work life balance programs. The intent is clear, that Comcast values its workforce, and is a worthy investment
7 - Return 401K match to 6%
