Amazon – Why Work For Us?

The most transformative of inventions are often those that empower others to pursue their dreams. Read stories of people who are transforming their lives with Amazon.

An equal opportunity initiative launched in early 2016 helps to transform the lives of women in our community; creating unique employment opportunities for them and enabling them to become achievers in their own right.

To provide equal opportunities, we took up the initiative of establishing our first women’s only delivery center at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in March 2016. This was soon followed by a second one at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Through the help of our service partners, these stations are completely managed and run by women. The Thiruvananthapuram delivery center boasts a team of six female delivery associates, managed by Divya Syam; while the Ramavaram delivery station in Chennai operates with a team of nine under the supervision of Jamuna Rani.

India’s beloved food brand, Amul, brings its delectable food products such as the ghee and Gulab Jamun to millions of new-age digital shoppers in the US through our Global Selling Program.

Amul is one of India’s largest, most loved and trusted food brand. But, its appeal is not just restricted to this country as there has always been a global recognition of the brand and demand for its high-quality products. Not just from Indians across the world, but from people of other cultures as well.

‘I Have Space’ (IHS) programme handles a significant proportion of our vast logistics volumes in India’s small towns and metro cities. Our delivery partnership with small store owners benefit us with last-mile connectivity, while our partners discover an extra source of income with zero investments.

By covering 100% Serviceable pin codes, Amazon touches every nook and corner of India. At the heart of our successful delivery strategy lies the last-mile connectivity programme —‘I Have Space’ or IHS. Our partners in this program are local entrepreneurs, who not only know their neighbourhoods like the back of their hands, but also enjoy the goodwill of their communities.

An equal opportunity initiative launched in early 2016 helps to transform the lives of women in our community; creating unique employment opportunities for them and enabling them to become achievers in their own right.

Sangeeta had achieved what some consider their dream. An MBA graduate from the WP Cary School of Business, she landed a successful job as a management consultant with the prestigious A.T. Kearny Global Management Consultant Firm (dated as the oldest in its line of business) in the USA. Yet the bright city lights and jazz-filled rhythm of the streets of Chicago never seemed to blind Sangeeta of her fond memories back home. Born to a humble farming community, spring was always a constant reminder of her love for nature.

Despite initial hiccups, this four-decade-old family-run store selling traditional handicrafts, has today managed to attract a nation-wide customer base with Amazon.

Established in 1976 by his grandfather, right in the heart of Bangalore, Rajasthan Emporium now has a clientele spanning the entire nation, thanks to Varun Bantia’s decision to partner with Amazon as an online seller.

At Amazon we believe the most radical and transformative of inventions are often those that empower others to unleash their creativity—to pursue their dreams.

Likewise we believe we have an equally strong opportunity in India to use our resources and strengths of innovation, technology, infrastructure and market reach to create opportunities that will transform lives of the communities we operate in and support India’s development goals in education, sanitation & health and skill development for livelihood.

We currently run several programs like Gift a Smile that is transforming and enabling new ways of giving or Amazon in the Community that is empowering local communities with tools and services that enable them to create opportunities for their growth.

We do this by creating value for and through engagement and partnership with our employees , customers, partners and civil society. All Amazon Care initiatives are envisaged to withstand the test of time by becoming self-sustainable and all our initiatives are implemented with the expertise of registered non-government organizations (NGOs) who come with a proven track record for outcomes.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You will be forced to think big and innovate beyond your limits.
You will be pushed to grow as a leader throughout your tenure.
    Limitless potential to make change.
    Relentlessly high standards.
Take any number of leaves when you feel like. Work from home whenever you want. Come to office when it suits you, leave when you feel like. As long as you make sure you deliver results.
You'll be forced to "own" what you work on.
    Great internal engineering culture.

If you join as an SDE, your manager will either be an L5 or L6. Many of them are extremely smart and will propel you to grow. Many won't be as effective. But the good thing is, you can do it yourself. You will have enough independence to make an impact and grow in your career. In fact, you are encouraged by the company to do projects outside of your day-to-day, work with other teams for short durations, have mentors from different organizations etc.
ALL L7+ managers I've interacted with have been highly competent and sharp. These are the folks you will look up to and seek to learn from.

You can't bullsh*t anybody. You will be found out.

    Cons

Teams in amazon are very, very independent. So much so that some of them might as well be in a separate company for all intents and purposes (some of them technically are). So there's bound to be bad teams and good teams.

In the good teams (which I believe would be most of them), the high standards and expectations push you to transform yourself into an extremely well rounded Leader+Engineer. But, the same standards can crush you if you aren't smart enough. If you're having to work 10-12 hours a day to keep up/stay ahead of the curve, then you aren't smart enough.

    Advice to Management

    For Bangalore -

The bar for L6 Managers needs to be raised. Engineers often leave for Seattle when they become SDE2. Many go because they know their L6 would probably not be as effective at helping him grow to an SDE3 level.

Give proper training in personal finance management to all employees. Most don't know basics about taxation and investments.

You need to be creating and encouraging more engineers to start leading.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Amazon (Hyderabad).

    Interview

On that day nearly 1000+ students have appeared for the interview and it took nearly 4 hours for me to enter into the first round which is JAM.The job is for experienced as well as freshers and I am a fresher. When we entered the room where JAM is taking place the H.R who is very friendly asked us to introduce about ourselves and later he personally asked each one of us various questions to test our communication skills. 22 people are there including me, nearly 7 people are experienced and remaining are freshers. Most of the people are feeling it difficult to speak in English nearly 8-10 have answered well. On completing he said that only one is selected and we are sorry you all are rejected better try next time after six months and the one who is selected is with experience but he is the one who feels it difficult to speak in english. He hasn't answered the questions properly and yet he is selected which is a big shock for us.
