Gender Diversity at Ciena

As part of our commitment to Ciena’s Corporate Social Responsibility we want to foster an inclusive environment that values and respects all individual’s strengths, perspectives, ideas, and ability to meet the needs of our customers globally.

Women@Ciena is the overarching initiative that encourages gender diversity. It does this by encouraging women to take the steps necessary to make the most of their careers; from onboarding new talent, coaching and mentoring to career planning, development and progression, as well as helping women reach the executive level.

Mission statement for Women@Ciena

To establish a Ciena culture that cultivates, inspires, and rewards the contribution of every individual no matter what sex, race, religion or otherwise. Through active awareness, we are creating an environment that attracts, develops, and retains more women in our workforce. Ultimately, our goal is to create an understanding about the value of each individual, to break down barriers that exist, and empower the voice and talents of women in our workforce.

Global Women’s Council
As part of Women@Ciena we have a Global Women’s Council which is comprised of women and men from across the organization – all levels, regions and disciplines – to ensure a genuine cross-section of talent and insights. The council’s aim is to grow the company’s diversity program globally, with local action in each of the regions in which we operate.
It involves the creation of smaller, regional groups to meet once a quarter as a ‘diversity team’ to share activities and develop new best practices as a grassroots program. The Global Women’s Council leaders initiate a local projects or initiatives every quarter as well as connect, communicate and participate with the other regional councils as a wider, global team.

In India, we’ve had activities like - Professional Ted Talks by employees covering subjects like financial wellbeing etc., Networking Sessions with Executive Visitors on site, Women's Day Celebrations, Iron Premier League - Women's Cricket, Mother’s Day Celebration, Book Review Session, Women’s Badminton Tournament and more.

Women@Ciena Communications and Research

Network providers worldwide are adopting Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and virtualized services. They’re embracing agile development and operational processes. They’re doing what it takes to avoid disruption from more nimble competitors—and that includes opening up, in a way they never have before, to open-source.

Open-source software is driving much of the technology innovation network providers need to achieve their overall digital transformation. It harnesses the power of a community—and the collaboration that happens within it—to break through many of the traditional constraints associated with development. With open-source, technology improvements happen faster—which is why we’ve been using open-source innovations to create value for our customers for years.

Openness and collaboration are core to who we are at Ciena, and they’re key pieces of our Adaptive Network vision. We actively contribute to numerous open-source initiatives and projects, and incorporate multiple open-source components into our Blue Planet Intelligent Automation Platform. Blue Planet’s microservices-based architecture enables the platform to integrate best-in-class open-source software elements with our own innovations to provide a more flexible and extensible solution to meet our customers’ evolving requirements.

had a phone interview, asking about my previous experience and talking about my CV.
Later had an on site interview with two panels.
Very friendly and relaxed. Conversation flowed naturally, and felt like a discussion.
Both panels described different aspects of the team, and felt like I learned a lot about the functions that relate to the job.

    Interview Questions

    • 1 ) Technical questions relating to core duties from my previous job. Show understanding of what happened and how I tackled the problems.
      2) Describe how I had encountered a bug or a problem during a project, and how I went about to solve it.   Answer Question
