Founded in 1826, we are the largest Indian spirits company involved in the manufacture, sale and distribution of beverage alcohol, producing and selling around 120 mn cases of Scotch whisky, IMFL whisky, brandy, rum, vodka, gin and wine. Our success as a business depends on the success of our people. So we make sure that we create an environment where all our employees feel included and able to perform at their best.
We have a culture where success is celebrated, no matter how big or small. We trust each other and value openess and honesty in our working relationships. As an example, look at our performance management process, Partners for Growth. This programme provides opportunities for everyone in Diageo to share their broader goals in life and supports them in exploring and harnessing their unique strengths at work.
More generally we recognise that our employees have commitments away from the workplace and encourage working patterns that balance home life and career. We also aim to attract and maintain a diverse employee base with a wide variety of individual characteristics, perspectives and experiences in every part of our business.
At Diageo, we believe no progress can be sustained without the inclusion and equal participation of women. We remain wholeheartedly committed to empowering women in our society and communities, and enabling them to realise their true potential. This is why our internal diversity programme has seen more women in leadership roles within Diageo.
To help women from marginalised backgrounds become self-reliant and integrated into the mainstream of progress , we have partnered with the British Council of India to run The Young Women Social Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YWSEDP) programme. The module developed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, is focussed on building social enterprise skills and the skills practically needed for running a business. These include management, finance, communications, leadership, marketing and fundraising. The programme began in 2014 and has trained 60 Master Trainers from NGOs and institutes, who in turn, have trained over 4,000 women till date.
We are aware of the importance of being responsible about our brands, and the way we develop, produce and sell them. As the world’s leading premium drinks business, we want to be at the forefront of industry efforts to promote responsible drinking and reduce the harmful use of alcohol. We continuously collaborate not just with individuals and families but also with governments, educators and law enforcers to reduce alcohol misuse and ensure responsible drinking.
With over 1,45,000 fatalities a year, India accounts for 12.5% of global road accident fatalities. ‘Diageo’s Road to Safety’ is a signature intervention that addresses drink driving and the broader cause of Road Safety.
We are a signatory to the Global Beer, Wine and Spirits Producers’ Commitments to reduce harmful drinking, aligned with the World Health Organization’s goal to reduce the harmful use of alcohol by 10 per cent by 2025. The key action areas under this pledge are: reducing underage drinking, strengthening and expanding marketing codes of practice, providing consumer information and responsible product innovation, reducing drink driving, and enlisting the support of retailers.

Unique in how the company and people care about the performance we deliver, the inclusion of all employees plus the impact on communities and society. Genuinely have freedom to determine the impact you want to have, the way you want to work, and to try out new ideas and build your career. Working with such iconic brands you feel privileged and excited every day to be holding the torch for their future. A globally connected company, that despite its size is only 30,000 people means it feels like a real community and somewhere that is both ambitious and incredibly fun to work at with people you care about.
It is good to see the business making changes in areas that are needed. Being less internally focused and more geared to customers and consumers will make sure we focus on the things that are fewer and most important, and remove some unnecessary complexity that has increased over time by being too inward looking. Also because it has been so internally driven for so long it can be hard to sometimes see that changes being made in the company are not only essential, they are being driven (often far harder!) in most other companies in order to stay competitive in this fast changing world. Need to keep doing more to bring the outside world in to keep perspective on what is truly important.
Advice to Management
Keep doing what makes this company great - investing in incredible brands, growing talented and diverse people and caring about our impact on communities.
I applied through college or university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Diageo (Mumbai) in April 2009.
The initial interview was an HR fit interview. He kept asking me standard HR questions about myself, my resume, and what I want to do in life. I didn't clear it, so I negotiated for the position. My negotiations happened after I got another job. I asked them whether I was in or out. I was interviewed by another 2 people. and was selected.
