I worked at East Side Games full-time
-Inclusive progressive team and environment
-Great people on game teams
-Favouritism to teams performing well, and the opposite
-Lack of structure, processes, methodology
- Founders don’t understand some of their departments
Advice to Management
- Founders still treating a mid-sized company with people trying to achieve their own creative goals as a startup where they can come in last second and change things to their preference without impacting the processes the game team set into place. Do less, listen more.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took a week. I interviewed at East Side Games (Vancouver, BC (Canada)) in November 2013.
I was called in for an initial interview with a producer and a senior programmer, who asked some fairly basic questions about experience, coding style, optimization, etc.
Afterwards I was called in to do a three hour tech test, which involved modifying a very simple game. I had to discover and fix two bugs, and then expand on the game as I saw fit. I didn't end up finishing my planned changes, but they seemed to like the level of creativity I showed.
