A real old boys’ club culture prevails at Holiday Extras. The trouble is, the company has grown whilst still retaining a small business culture. Despite proclaiming to recognise and value talent, there are in fact very few opportunities to progress. Performance reviews happen irregularly and pay rises are as rare as hens’ teeth, meaning that salaries tend to be on the low side.

Many of those in middle and senior management have worked there for years and all close ranks to protect each other. This was particularly evident in the selection process during the recent redundancies. There was blatant favouritism with some managers preferring to save their ‘mates’ over team members who showed real talent and potential in their roles. The company claims to have a family vibe, but the culture is more of a clique. You will always be vulnerable if you don’t fit into the boys’ club mentality and you are made to feel extremely uncomfortable if you dare to speak out.

    Advice to Management

Please realise that barbecues, Easter Egg hunts and 'Dad Jokes' do not pay people’s mortgages. You need to ensure that performance and salary reviews are happening regularly throughout all teams to give undervalued and underpaid staff a much-needed opportunity to be able to progress.

You should hold some of your management much more to account and not assume they are always effective just because they have worked for the company for a long time. You allowed certain managers to make biased selections during the redundancy process just because they wanted to save their friends. As a result, you have lost some very dedicated and proactive staff who could have been instrumental in helping to rebuild the business.

    Easy Interview

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Holiday Extras (Bristol, England (UK)) in February 2020.

At home assessment which was then "reviewed" by a developer at Holiday Extras.

I found the review to be extremely disappointing. I was told that there were several issues with my submission, all of which didn't make sense and could be countered. The "best" one was that I was told by adding a small React hooks library I had "bloated" the web application... even though it scored 99/100 on Google Lighthouse (whilst I may add that the holidayextras home page scores less than 50!).

  • We held our first #HXHosts event yesterday, inviting the awe-inspiring Natalia Cohen part of the world record breaking, all female @coxlesscrew. She left us all energised, motivated and inspired. 'It was one of those rare talks that really inspired me deep at my core.' one HXer said. Check our their documentary on Netflix:

Losing Sight of Shore - Everyone has a Pacific to cross

EVERYONE HAS A PACIFIC TO CROSS, and the journey of the Coxless Crew is truly a symbol for the 'Pacifics' we all cross in our lives everyday. Whether it's overcoming an illness, writing a book, standing up for yourself, or in fact a physical challenge similar to the row, we want to hear about your experience!

  • Over the past few weeks, HXers donated over 100 presents to our HX Giving Trees for women and children living in local refuges this Christmas. The response was overwhelming so a big thank you to everyone who took part and for your generosity. Here we are delivering the presents...
