People are awesome. Somehow the company has managed to consistently attract bright, young talent to grow in their roles. Lots of opportunities outside of billable client projects to work on internal initiatives that interest you. Senior employees often act as informal mentors outside of the formal mentor structure.

Growing pains have persisted since the firm’s acquisition with only minor adjustments. Very reactive to putting out fires from an HR and employee experience standpoint, but not proactively making investments on behalf of the employees.

Multiple leadership positions have remained unfulfilled or by-committee over the last few years.

The company markets itself as “Customer-Driven”, but we talk-the-talk more than we walk-the-walk. Product, Design, and Research specialists do not have many opportunities to grow into meaningful senior positions - which has led to turnover among the more veteran UX consultants in particular.

The pressure to get in your 40 billable hours makes committing to internal initiatives challenging. Internal projects either go unfinished or are left on the shelf after reaching an initial set of success criteria.

    Advice to Management

Hire leaders and senior practitioners externally that have successfully navigated firms in growth-mode to bolster the company foundation. We’ve been scrappy for far too long and the most senior employees have spent most of their careers at the company.

Adopt a culture of introspection and feedback gathering. Have a real interest in regularly examining the current state of the firm and prioritize opportunities and issues accordingly.

    Difficult Interview

The process took 3+ weeks. I interviewed at Kin + Carta Americas (New York, NY (US)).

First had a call with a recruiter, then a call with principal and I am scheduled for an onsite. Standard questions from HR. Call with principal was about 50 minutes of his questions followed by about 5 minutes for my questions.
