    Pros

    Every business has two elements:

The unique bit in the IP, the story, the 'why, and

The standard bit, the bit thats the same in every business, the business operation.

Chemistry has a great intent, a great 'why'. It was light years ahead of the competition and invested in technology when everyone else was napping. We ate our own dog food on hiring too which meant you would rarely work in a place with so many great and talented people.

Responsibility - For those of you at the beginning of your career you will rarely find an organisation that will give you as much latitude as Chemistry does. If you want to be way ahead of your peers in other consultancies in terms of responsibility, including the big 4, then Chemistry is one of the few places you will get that.

Flexibility - It's also an output focussed business. There is mention of the lack of work life balance in other reviews but, if you deliver, you can pretty much choose how and when you get stuff done. It's a flexible environment and one where you can truly be yourself.

Culture - yes it can be described as cultish, but thats a good thing. Wishy washy cultures have no meaning. Clearly defined cultures have something that you can align to and have strong employer value propositions. If the culture fits you as an individual you will love it and you will be surrounded by like minded people.

    Cons

The operational bit - Chemistry is an ambitious organisation and unlike many others, we invested every penny back in the business. Progress was more important than profit. The ambition has at times stressed the business financially as the investments got bigger and this has led to some fall out which is a shame. How you run a business is separate from the business that you run and the ops side and its issues detracts from the great business that Chemistry is.

    Advice to Management

Focus - there is magic in that intent but it gets diluted by "possibilities" which end up distracting resources and energy. Stay focussed on the core magic because it works.

Execution - separate the running of the business from the intent. Get great operational people in to run the business and leave them to it whilst everyone else focusses on delivering the magic that Chemistry is so good at.

    Application

The process took 3 days. I interviewed at The Chemistry Group.

    Interview

I applied through Workable via their website after doing some research about what the company does. I was really enthusiastic about their product and their company ethos so spent quite a long time writing a cover letter as well as providing an extensive and thoughtful answer to the question 'Why do you want to work for Chemistry?'

I sent all this through at midnight on a Saturday and by Sunday afternoon, had an email thanking me for my application and sending through an online Culture Fit assessment link. I was of two minds about this - was it a bad sign that someone in HR was working on a Sunday afternoon? But as I was keen, I looked at it as 'at least I don't have to wait until Monday to hear'. I completed the online assessment which didn't take too long and it posed some interesting work/colleague scenarios. You receive a report immediately giving you the results which I enjoyed reading and found interesting. I also felt that the report results did accurately reflect my personality (I came out very high on flexibility, transparency and curiosity).

I received a generic email Monday morning saying: "After reviewing your application, we don’t feel we have the right opportunity for you in the business at the moment." While grateful that the process only took a few days, it struck me that the response wasn't reflective of the role that I had applied for (I had applied for a specific job they posted and the reply didn't fit). I came away thinking that they are taking a sort of 'fast food' approach to hiring and in hindsight, I can see that it is not the company for me.

What's it like to apply to Chemistry!? - Chemistry Group

At Chemistry a phrase you will often hear is 'We drink our own champagne". This doesn't mean that we like to crack open champagne in the office on a Tuesday afternoon; instead it's something that runs through the core of everyday working at Chemistry.
