Mission: To be healthcare providers' most trusted service, helping them do well by doing the right thing.
We have a 20-year history of hiring super ambitious, genuinely friendly, slightly weird, 'wicked' smart (we're headquarted in Boston) people. And now, our 5000+ strong team of athenistas, located in offices around the country and in India, are working diligently to unbreak a system that is inherently damaged.
We know healthcare is broken because that's how athenahealth began. In 1997, co-founders Jonathan Bush and Todd Park ran a birthing center in California, where they found themselves inundated with paperwork, and spending the bulk of their time just trying to get paid, rather than actually helping patients deliver healthy babies.
When they couldn't find a solution to this burden (the paperwork, not the babies), they developed their own. The result: The cloud-based services now offered by athenahealth. Boom.
Our vision was birthed at the birthing center, itself: to be the health information backbone for the entire nation. So here we go!
Health care is plagued with inefficiencies that can jeopardize quality care. Doctors spend mere minutes with patients, often separated by a computer screen, doctors spend more time checking payment status than your vital signs, and important health records are not shared between providers. We strive to address that by enabling the easier flow of patient information, and taking on the administrative burden so the doctors don't have to. Our open technology platform supports further improvement by inviting disruptive innovation and encouraging partners to join in our mission. With inventive tools and services, everyone within healthcare can benefit.
We have the smartest, most ambitious, most driven employees, who genuinely enjoy each other. We work tenaciously, we enjoy what we do, and we are redefining the concept of friendships at work. Wait, fun at work? Yep, it's possible.
We are teachers and learners who work tenaciously as a team to achieve true customer success. We have a culture of candor, and an innate obsession to alleviate the work and stress of our clients.
We are creating easy-to-use, ultra-powerful, network-enabled tools that allow medical professionals to do what they do best – treat patients. Our work matters; both to us, and to the nation. Our work is challenging and inspiring, and scratches our 'do-good' itch.
We provide a collaborative workspace for humans (and often their canine companions), including frequent company meetings, wellness programs, competitive compensation, generous PTO, sabbaticals, a cool environment, and way more awesomeness.
Activities may vary by location.
Corporate Responsibility has been baked into our DNA from the start. Here at athenahealth, we’ve always been focused on our health care providers, helping them do well by doing the right thing.
Our Corporate Responsibility program, athenaGives, goes above and beyond, working to improve the health of underserved, uninsured, and/or at-risk populations. We offer cash grants to innovative health nonprofits working in our local communities, support local nonprofits at which employees donate time, and maximize our social impact by leveraging our network enabled services beyond the traditional client base. We’re working across our networks and in our local communities to transform healthcare.
We our proud of our culture: a place where people genuinely enjoy the company of their colleagues, and where they are inspired to be a better version of themselves everyday. We have too many “top workplace” awards to list (but, we'll try).
We believe in face time with leaders: frequent company meetings (live streamed to every office), regular conversations with the CEO, lunch dates with the executive team, beers with the senior leaders, and more
We invest in our people: through development opportunities, learning, sabbaticals, perks, community groups, activities, employee resource groups, digital display screens, an employee experience team, and more
We actually like each other: we have friends at work, we love our company events, our hallmark “athen-o-ween” gives us the opportunity to dress up and show off our children at work, and it's normal to see athenistas having conversations (personal and professional) at our barista station, when volunteering, and even at our desks
We foster entrepreneurship: it’s how we were founded and how we grow; we value ideas and innovation from our employees

Advice to Management
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at athenahealth (Chennai).
After clearing Hackerrank problem, I was called for an in-person discussion.
Technical round (1 hr)
Design round (1 hr)
Manager round (30 mins)- Started with tell me about yourself and the projects I worked. This was done by Mr X.
I explained him about Rate Limiting System that I currently work. He interrupted me and suggested there is no need of such system and this could be done using Firewall (I was astonished by his overlooking here and tried to explain which he was not ready to listen).
On further discussion, about CSRF, he suggested CSRF prevention is not needed and the same could be achieved using https connection (I was at a loss for words of his overlooking once again).
There were many similar hazy statements that he made in our conversation like using Oauth2 for web (whereas ouath2 is only meant for APIs), Express-js is the server machine on which node runs (whereas express-js is a framework).
I agree that not everyone is knowledgeable on all areas. But throughout the interview he was overlooking the concept I explained and making insane statements without basic knowledge of it and showing his attitude by undervaluing my work and also my organization’s work (If he is able to make all those suggestions in matter of minutes, wouldn’t my organization brainstormed those suggestions. This attitude frustrated me a lot)
To give a context to Athenahealth management of his statements, it is like me stating “Athenahealth can use WhatsApp for Secure text messaging(athenaText)”.
He devastated my mood of the day, nullified the time I invested for interview preparation and process. Also, the level of filtration process that I went through went in vain.
