Bringing Science to the Art of Marketing
DataXu was founded by MIT aeronautics and astronautics scientists who wrote the combinatorial language that guided NASA’s Mars mission plans. These scientists – joined by co-founders with extensive digital media and consumer electronics expertise – examined potential commercial applications that would benefit from a system that could make real-time decisions. They knew that a huge opportunity existed in marketing, being disrupted by the consumer digital lifestyle and big data, but still operating with manual solutions based on intuition, as well as an inefficient supply chain.
The founding team recruited the smartest people they knew to create DataXu as it is today – an open, neutral platform that enables marketers to use our ‘rocket science‘ in a simple UI to understand and engage consumers in a digital world. We are proud to have created the industry’s first and only real-time multi-variate decision system to bring science to the art of marketing. And our work has just begun!
The Programmatic Marketing Revolution
Now our vision is a reality at leading global brands. The DataXu platform enables our clients to manage and optimize marketing investments across all digital channels, realizing significant performance and cost benefits. We empower them to turn insights into action – helping them build strong brands and win in an ever more competitive marketplace.
DataXu sits at the heart of the all-digital world, putting more data to work in innovative new ways, bringing our innovations to new enterprises and market segments, and empowering customers to solve their most difficult business challenges. We are continually advancing our technology to meet emerging challenges for marketing professionals and business leaders alike.
We remain committed to true innovation and to transforming marketing in the digital world.
For DataXu, Caring Is More than a Responsibility
DataXu is dedicated to social responsibility and supporting local philanthropic initiatives. As high-tech entrepreneurs, we’re always in a hurry to discover the Next Big Thing. But giving back to the communities where we work is also a very important thread in our DNA. Xu Keepers support scores of local charities with donations and their volunteer time—including Charles River Conservancy, Greater Boston Food Bank, Cradles to Crayons, Pets are Worth Saving (PAWS)/Chicago, and many more.
Innovation Day is a DataXu tradition. When it's Innovation Day, employees stop the day-to-day work to partner with colleagues around the globe on projects to better our company. Team structures are suspended for that day, and employees are welcomed and encouraged to work with anyone they want on any project that they feel will benefit the company. Innovation Day is completely devoted to breaking up a normal day, being creative, and working with people who don’t normally don’t get to collaborate.
This idea for Innovation Day was inspired by research into the world’s most innovative companies. The key, unifying theme between the most innovative companies is that each of them find a way for employees to do self-driven creative work, even when this work has less than a 100% chance of success. This gives each employee the chance to take a risk and go down a path that he or she thinks is a good idea, without worrying about missing deadlines or objectives. It might fail, but that's OK! You can’t innovate without taking a risk.
No meetings will interrupt your concentration, no phone calls, no scrum, no backlog. It's just our teams creatively working together for 24 hours. Innovation Day is the chance to research a new business or marketing idea, try out a new code library, come up with a crazy new product, invent a new machine learning trick, or fix some annoying bug that is never a top priority. Innovation is not just on the core product, it's all aspects of the business, from ad operations to people strategy to finance to product. Everyone can be innovative and over 40% of our Innovation Day ideas have been implemented into our business. We’re proud to support innovation and give our employees room to grow, learn and create something astonishing!
Comments from Senior Director of Engineering - CHID KOLLENGODE
“It is not often that we get opportunities to seed a division of the company in a different geographical area. When I got the opportunity to do that in Bangalore I felt great and nervous. Great because the team I spoke to in Boston radiated confidence. Management, including the CEO, knew what they wanted to do. The culture impressed me – give responsibility and allow people to blossom. I knew I had to take this up. Nervous because it is a huge challenge and enormous responsibility – to be able to open and office and attract top talent for the work we needed to do here. To be able to convince a bright group of engineers that this is the place for them to be.
I have had wonderful encouragement from executive management for setting up what I believe is a great workplace. We have been able to hire great engineers, we code, we innovate and we eat fresh food cooked on premises every day. Another indication of the management believing in innovation – across the company! This is the first time I am part of a company that truly believes in innovation and ideas from employees across the company. DataXu runs two innovation days every year and ideas from everyone in the company is welcomed. Ideas from how to tweak a process to make it more friendly to how to solve an complex engineering problem with out of the box solution. In other words management cares about making this a great place to work. Organizations typically talk of innovation but only a handful do it. And that too across all divisions, not just engineering.
In short, my one year stint has been marvelous and I continue to enjoy the technical challenges, leadership opportunities and the constant learning. There is never a dull day at work!”

Advice to Management
Keep up the good work.
I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at dataxu (Boston, MA (US)) in April 2015.
They move quickly through the interview process. Probably you will have your result in 2-3 weeks with all the interviews done. First is a phone interview with a set of Java questions then they send you a test to code and send it back. Finally 3 back to back 1 hour technical rounds consisting of 2 people each.
