I worked at AIG full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Telecommuting option a few days per week and great 401K matching.

    Cons

    - Nepotism is practiced almost religiously by executive/management team – who you know is more important than what you know; - Salary increases are non-existent; - Very low morale the past 2 years; - Management is incompetent and doesn’t even bother setting goals anymore; - The full-timer (FTE) to consultant/offshore ratio is very skewed with only 1 out of 4 being FTE

    Advice to Management

Stop relying on your friends and loyal subordinates to fill important roles and rely more on experience and competence. A company’s success is defined by visionary leadership and competent staff to execute on those visions.

I worked at AIG full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

3 weeks of PTO; remote work is allowed; good colleagues

    Cons

    Super political; everyone works in silo; everyone protects what they know; no corporate culture; rampant favoritism; no appreciation for hard work or overtime; limited or no career advancement; constant reorganizations happen at AIG, which make you feel absolutely no job security; little to no formal training;

    Advice to Management

Don't lay off people indiscriminately; don't change your management every year; you will keep having bad quarters over and over and then you come back to 2008 when you will be asking the government for bailout money! Don't hire expensive C level people who don't actually add any value to the organization.

    Pros

    - Options to Work from Home - Charity donation matching - For every $1, AIG will donate $2.

    Cons

    - Salary raises are non-existent - Plenty of fire drills, which means you need to get a report / numbers etc... immediately and accurately. - Unorganized and people are unaccountable. - Plenty of organizational changes every couple of years. I have gone through 5 managers so far.

I have been working at AIG full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great IT team to work with; Challenging business problems to solve; Somewhat flexible work schedule

    Cons

No opportunity for career advancement; management does not invest in developing their employees; Always asked to take on significant responsibility beyond your formal job role, but with no possibility of advancement, so there is no chance of compensation for your additional efforts, so basically you are providing free labor; IT VPs and above are not qualified to run an IT organization as they have basically no... understanding of technical domains; Projects are disorganized leading to a feeling of constant failure

    Advice to Management

Care more about your people, not just on paper, but through action. Lead, don't manage. Invest in your employees if you want to retain them. Don't say something to your employees unless you mean it and are prepared to deliver, otherwise you become untrustworthy

I worked at AIG full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great benefits and locations. Very eager people can climb the corporate ladder with ease as long as you know someone. Some how there is a level of a job well done most days.

    Cons

Too big to notice you, managers often don't recognize your work unless others tell them. Often the company losses sight of what employees can do with limited resources. Doing more with less is a mantra, but often gets them into trouble biting off more than they can chew.

    Advice to Management

Offering more training is key. If you notice someone not performing then take the initiatives to see if training is an option. Often management forgets that the people they direct need to be guided, not all are self motivated, however the talent they foster is rewarded.
