      Run and don't look back!

      Pros

Some very talented folks who deserve much much more

      Cons

Company is poorly managed. Bad decisions at the Senior management level that serve only one person. Mr. Allen is very self-serving. If he truly valued his employees, he would have taken the necessary steps to avoid a reduction to a 4-day work week back in 2007, which by the way is still in effect 6 years later. High turn over in the sales organization with very lean resources to support and innovate the product offerings. That cannot be a good sign.

How not to run a company.

      Pros

People are generally nice to work with.

      Cons

No pay increase in 6 years. Pay now worth 18% less due to inflation. US employees are still on a 4 day week after 3 years while Mr Burns continues to buy other companies. Lack of a clear strategy moving forward. Lack of communication from management. Failure to innovate from within. Brain Drain. Failure to hold on to talented developers and no attempt to replace them. Morale is rock bottom. Management are 'Yes' men. If you are into a bit of Sycophancy you can go far without much talent. To celebrate 25 years each 'lucky' employee got a mug, yes folks a mug. We all felt so special getting that generous gift in these hard times.

Is this really a software company?

      15 Nov 2011 -

      Pros

Work life balance is good. Time off is easy to get and vacation and holiday pay is reasonable. People are friendly.

      Cons

No innovation. All innovation is purchase through acquisitions and that's where it ends. The innovate people leave as soon as they are assimilated into corporate. The company culture is more akin to industrial manufacturing then software. The badge clock system is rigidly monitored for software professionals. The time wasted on making sure your badge report is accurate and reporting any discrepancy to corporate is unheard of in the software industry. Employee's pay has been reduced by 20% for close to 3 years now while ASG has had a record year of acquiring new companies. No 401k employee match. Promotions are only given in management. I've yet to see a non management employee promoted.

ASG is not a software company. It eats software companies and poops money for Art Allen.

      16 Aug 2010 - Consultant

      Pros

It's easy to be a big fish in the small pond of ASG, and commonly one can find people at elevated positions which they would never get in more world-class companies. Depending on the office, people usually have a lot of autonomy in how they plan their days and it's not necessary to give up your personal life. Starting salaries are generally quite good. But be forewarned, you will not see an increase in pay unless you leave the company and return later.

      Cons

Each year, around 14% of companies get new bosses, yet ASG has been stuck with the same guy for over 25. Essentially, ASG is the owner Art Allen's vanity project. He flies all over the planet apparently producing very little in sales or profit, meeting customers that have already been vetted by local people and claiming responsibility for their successes. Art Allen is basically a sales guy whose company has outgrown him. If this were a public company, he would have been fired long ago, or limited to head a sales division where he would be most effective. Make no mistake, ASG is not a software company, at least not in the normal sense. There is little push to innovate or keep its products competitive. It's business model is to purchase smaller software companies, fire most of the workers, then attempt to sell the software and live off of the maintenance and a few new sales while the product dies a slow death. As a general indicator, the overall ratio of developers to products is in the ballpark of 1 developer to 2 products. So in the IT software market, ASG is more akin to a dollar store than a top-notch software vendor. This sales-only approach to software has permeated the company culture. There is no viable long-term strategy. There is no career development, since everyone but Art Allen is expendable. There is no attempt to retain people and accordingly there are no pay raises. The mandatory pay cuts haven't helped, especially when people are still expected to produce 5-day weeks worth of work.

Unless it really suits your goals and purposes, run as fast as you can...

      Pros

Working for Allen Systems Group exposes you to many different industries, sectors, and IT departments. It can be very educational in that way. Also, depending on your position, there can be a lot of international travel.

      Cons

Employee morale is incredibly low. Turnover is high at all levels. Competent people rarely stay longer than two years and most employees are spread thin, so there is little to no organizational memory. The president (for life) makes many arbitrary decisions many of which would seem impractical for a software company, except the goal of Allen Systems group is not to innovate and create quality software, but to buy software companies, fire most of the developers, and suck up the money from maintenance. This leads to a lot of embarrassment in front of customers which can be very demoralizing.
