I have been working at Abt Associates full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Lots of online learning opportunities Cross project learning Positive organisational culture

    Cons

Inequity in salary structure and promotion opportunities. Policies are more focused towards retention of the senior staff, middle tier staff feels left out at times

    Advice to Management

Gradation and promotion criteria to be clearer. Better inclusive policies for middle tier staff w.r.t. to bonuses etc.

I worked at Abt Associates full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Since Abt has a wide array of divisions and contracts, you can work on a variety of topics. In my two years there I researched everything from renewable energy financing to hospice care. - Well-trained, expert staff who are passionate about what they're researching.

    Cons

    - Professional development opportunities for junior staff can really depend on the supervisor. There's not a strong internal system for developing talent, so be ready to take initiative yourself.

I worked at Abt Associates full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

*Very flexible work arrangements (telework, how one achieves one's 40-hour work week) *Excellent benefits package (including Metro and bicycle subsidies) *(Mostly) dedicated client-facing staff, who believe in the value and mission of their projects *(Modest) spot bonuses from appreciative supervisors

    Cons

*Received highest performance reviews, overshot sales goal for the year, kept a new contract running during a scandal with a new hire. Promotion? Never happened. Obviously contributions of front-line, client-facing staff are neither noticed nor valued. *In one of firm's domestic Divisions, specific practice areas were dissolved, resulting in uncoordinated decision making and overwhelmed staff. *Numerous... client-facing staff departures during past year, either voluntary or involuntary. *Inability to properly staff contracts, leading to performance issues. Labor planning/financial management of contracts in the dark ages. *Support services (contracts, finance, billing) continuously reinvent processes, adding to administrative bureaucracy. *No reconciliation between mandatory billable (i.e., contract) work and required non-billable (business development) work.

    Advice to Management

*Value your front-line, client-facing staff. Pay attention to what they are doing. *Stop reinventing administrative protocols. *Fix the labor planning/financial management issues. *Reconcile billable work with business development work for client-facing staff.
