I worked at Aston University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good colleagues and atmosphere Was given a lot responsibility early on, which helped me secure job offers from other universities later on.

    Cons

Workload is too high. Module leader for four modules, 10/8 MSc dissertation supervision, 8 placement supervision & programme directorship. This is manageable after year or 2 once the materials are done. But can be stressful early on My head of department was personally great, but rest of SMT, not so much. They are introducing a January starts programme, so everyone’s teaching load will increase significantly. Several people wrongly denied promotions. Had one person denied promotion to senior lecturer, and a month later was offered senior lecturerships at Kings College London and University of Birmingham. There are also inconsistencies, for instance the new deputy dean, I hear does not have a PhD in the business school.
