I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Looks after its people, although this may vary between divisions. Competitive salary. Consults personnel over prospective work.

    Cons

Top heavy management structure and processes. Not enough trust placed in more junior grades.

    Advice to Management

Don't micro manage - trust your people.

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

high profile company and projects; friendly, non-competitive working environment; excellent work-life balance

    Cons

salary anomaly (worse then their competitors); hiring managers like to lowball new starter's salary; unable to retain excellent staff; Business Units work in silos

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some of your colleagues are really good, inspirational people with a good sense of humour. Making an attempt to embed innovation into the company.

    Cons

People in management have no management experience, wrong people running the show. The CEO and lieutenants have no vision other than to say the right things at the next quarterly shareholder update. Confused strategy about whether to concentrate on UK or go harder on international work. Old fashioned mentality, not agile, not entrepreneurial, not changing with the times, poor salary and benefits, no bonus for most staff...

    Advice to Management

Trying to implement a more responsive, agile and customer centred culture in the UK is not working as the same people are in management roles that are the cause of so many problems.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Large number of opportunities to move around the business, most areas take an interest in individual development and encourage professional memberships

    Cons

Inter-business collaboration very difficult since every area wants to meet own local targets. Business very risk averse, with processes to match which stifles innovation, despite what is generally claimed.

    Advice to Management

Need to concentrate on retention of best people, with clear direction and freeing up individuals to work smarter and not constrained by layers of process.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great projects. Lots of good people to do the work. Healthy working culture (professional and courteous, usually). Majority of management are from the UK, rather than from the region, and therefore they have values which align with the Atkins brand, and not just a "local version" of it.

    Cons

Poor mid-level communication. Poor staff recognition. Major "old boys club" vibe.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Entrepreneurial Spirit: Management of adults by adults. Very smart group of people. Stabilized very positively. The outlook is very strong.

    Cons

New structures have been put in place - there is some concern but they appear to be very positive.

    Advice to Management

Keep the positive methods and outlook.

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

Wide variety of projects and extensive client base offering fantastic opportunities for junior technical staff to develop their skills and experience. Middle technical project management is often supportive and willing to invest time in staff training.

    Cons

Many incompetent staff promoted to senior positions. Business success heavily dependent on experienced & motivated senior engineers, very often not recognised for their valuable contribution to the business. Atkins is not a place for senior engineers trying to advance their careers, unless you are already in a local boys club, offering fast track promotions when individuals are simply not ready for them.

    Advice to Management

Senior managers need to start contributing to the business growth - less spreadsheet tracking and more contact with existing/potential new clients. Honest performance review is advisable for all senior grades, which includes a 360 feedback inviting lower grade staff to comment on their performance. Don't be scared to downgrade underperforming individuals.

Current Employee - Principal Consultant in Epsom, England

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

Friendly atmosphere, good attitude to work-life balance

    Cons

Innovation and collaboration are largely absent; pay is not competitive; office is outdated; strategy is poorly communicated; work is at the lower end of the food chain

    Advice to Management

Mandate a cross-selling target for MDs; communicate corporate and business unit strategy more effectively; encourage innovation and take some risks
