I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Variety of projects to work on. Career progression is decent for a large organisation. Flexible benefits are decent.

    Cons

Work/life balance isn't as good as the company claims, not since the takeover by SNC-Lavalin. This is a particular problem because Atkins selling point vis-a-vis their competitors has always been that that the work/life balance is superior, with the trade-off being a lower salary than the likes of other engineering consultancies. However since the takeover work/life balance has got progressively worse, and in addition...

    Advice to Management

Reign in the poor reporting culture and encourage employees to report the actual hours they work rather than the silly rules of never reporting more than 37.5.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Relaxed working hours, unlike traditional management consultancies. Startup spirit.

      Cons

Location of Dubai office (though you will mostly be on client site). Recent removal of per diems (replaced with expenses) for engagements outside your contract city. A bit harder to win new work due to relatively new entry into the market.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Flexibility, interesting work, strong technical support, opportunities to expand skills, opportunities to challenge yourself, gain experience in new areas (business development and/or project management) with support

      Cons

It's easier to get as pay rise by moving elsewhere, otherwise no other cons. However generally if you work hard they'll reward you.

      Advice to Management

More promotions with stronger pay rises otherwise will continue to lose staff to competitors willing to pay more

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Very inclusive and perfect if you’re on the graduate scheme. Budget permitted, they allow you to go on courses that benefit you and the business.

      Cons

Not great for experienced hires as career progression is painfully slow. Bit of an old boys club so pay is low compared to industry standard. Yet huge in costs??

      Advice to Management

Reduce overheads and get rid of dead wood to reduce on cost. Encourage and be open to new blood reaching senior management. Don’t be afraid to buck the process to keep hold of good staff

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Great company to work for, lots of ideas, creative minds and technically strong! I have enjoyed working across disciplines, wide variety of projects and exciting opportunities to get involved at all levels.

      Cons

Needs to still find a balance between standard practice in technical excellence and creative thinking. Variation between team management is heavily dependent on individual team leaders

      Advice to Management

Increase the role of accountability and delivery because I did see dead weight that is not commercial focused or client aware.

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Atkins is a great place to start your career, especially if you join as an engineer on the graduate scheme where you rotate around the various divisions. As with all places I've worked there are negatives (and hopefully I've conveyed these constructively) however I want to emphasize that I have no regrets from working at Atkins for the 5+ years that I did. It gave me the strong foundation I needed to start my career...

      Cons

If you are in any of the periphery businesses at Atkins (i.e. not a core Design & Engineering' area then it very much feels like you are on the sidelines. This means that the experience of being part of the major projects Atkins is renowned for or the more professional career development routes does not get realized. A key issue when in one of the many periphery businesses is that it is very difficult to get a wide...

      Advice to Management

Listen to the ideas of junior staff; recognize young talent and promote/reward where appropriate - you need to start retaining your leaders across all divisions. If you hire graduates then allow them to rotate around the company as promised rather than let them become monopolized by a single team. Try to start negotiating better contracts with clients (i.e. demonstrate the value your services offer rather than just...

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

Decent salaries and benefits that are generally competitive with other big global engineering firms. But don't rely on the recent positive reviews. Rather, actually talk to current and previous Atkins employees before you accept a job with this company. The best talent left long ago and most of those that are left are actively looking to get out. Increasing shareholder value - stock price - is the only value this company...

Toxic cut-throat environment; little or no appreciation of employees - you are only as good as your last timesheet; very quick to layoff employees after projects are completed; no long-term commitment to retaining experienced staff; sales and business development strategy is completely lacking as evidenced by declining revenues; U.S. organizational scheme is highly flawed, confusing and inefficient; U.S. CEO is untrustworthy...

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

Nothing that I have seen since 2012

      Cons

Many engineers have been laid off and several good ones left the company because of poor organization, poor management. The ones who stay are looking forward to leave ASAP. The office is driven by office politics, gossip and fear. It is also driven by paranoia. The managers are only concerned about saving their own tails. Instead of laying off the managers who fail consistently, they laid off engineers who did their...
