I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Globally recognised engineering company Interesting projects (pre-2009 anyway) Some great managers and mentors Opportunities to innovate

    Cons

Some awful senior management with blatant favouritism and bias displayed on many occasions Behaviour at Atkins is a function of consequences - particularly at the SLT level who I have seen act atrociously

    Advice to Management

You should embrace the diversity among your staff and stop Stop allowing childlike behaviour Listen and act upon the feedback from your Management Development Centres; why waste time and money?

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very structured Rewarded according to effort Very respected within the sector Global projects

    Cons

Senior management seem to be part of the old boys club and have all been to public school. There opportunities to move / travel within the business but it isn't easy. Reluctance to support those who want to get on.

I have been working at Atkins full-time

    Pros

Technical staff leaders in their field, most people unfailingly helpful in spite of huge work pressure, interesting projects, opportunity for international travel, excellent brand.

    Cons

Arrogant and incompetent senior management, too many bureaucratic processes, obsession with money making, risk averse decision making, constant organisational re-structuring, awful work / life balance.

    Advice to Management

95% of you should resign, and it would positively improve things. Appoint managers who understand people and not processes.

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

The company has a good focus on personal development and choosing your own career path is largely up to you if you take the initiative and talk to the right people. Plenty of opportunities for secondments at other business (+/- a year or two) and client exposure is high on some projects. Flexible working hours and relaxed office environment. I have however noticed in a change for the worse in recent months.

    Cons

You are placed in a team when starting which might focus on engineering which you are not entirely confident with. Once you're in a team, its very difficult to move. Some teams are also quite cliquey. There should be more choice in which team you are placed, or at least an explanation/summary of what each team does given to prospective employees before they join. There is a mismatch between a constant push for... productivity and the effort senior management go for to actually find work for staff that are unproductive. This is more so in certain teams than in others and is also largely dependent on the line manager you are given. Salary progression is poor which is why staff retention at mid-senior grades is suffering

    Advice to Management

Perhaps slow down the aggressive growth policy (20%/year?) Focus more on how to increase the efficiency of the business as it current is rather than hiring more and more cheap grads.

"A poorly managed firm that hasn't come to grips with the fact it was acquired"

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

Good office network. Many talenet and dedicated people, especially at the entry and mid-levels. Flexible work environment.

    Cons

Low pay except for senior management. Atkins North America is the product of the acquisition of PBSJ by UK-based Atkins in 2010. Yet most former PBSJ senior management don't act like anything has changed. Also, lots of political maneuvering by senior managers to protect their turf. A highly "silo-ed" environment with very little collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Time to reorganize. Break down barriers between divisions and regions. Ongoing layoffs hurt morale. Over-emphasis on meeting weekly producitivty numbers diminishes marketing. "Atkins" is a new brand in the US so it needs to think like a start-up.

I have been working at Atkins

    Pros

Good opportunity for beginning Engineers or Scientists to get a leg in the door for environment science, construction, or Civil engineering.

    Cons

Room for career development or advancement is limited. After 2-3 years hear you will become stagnant due to the poor leadership of the senior management.
