I have been working at B&M Retail part-time

    Pros

As a part time member of staff, I like how the shifts have been split so that I'm in maybe 3 or 4 days a week but only for a few hours. It lets me fit in other activities in the week. One of the benefits of working here is the 10% staff discount (though I believe this is not valid for buying alcohol or electronics). I know this will probably vary from store to store, but I really enjoy working with my colleagues. There is definitely a strong sense of teamwork.

    Cons

I sometimes feel like the company's policy treats its staff like criminals. Apparently after each shift it's company policy to search you. On top of that, they will also conduct random searches at any point. I understand that shoplifting is a huge concern, but I feel like it really betrays staff trust and is quite demoralising and even humiliating at times. I'm happy to say that everyone I work with is very nice, and I can't imagine any of them ever shoplifting from the store. I know that that won't always be the case from store to store, but the point is that I feel like it creates a negative atmosphere. Even though I don't have anything to hide, I dread this part of the day because I feel criminalised. I don't know if this is a normal procedure for retail, but I've certainly not heard of this being done anywhere else and have never had to deal with this in any other job before. Then again, I could be wrong. It could be completely normal, but again, I've never heard or experienced this kind of policy before.

I have been working at B&M Retail part-time

    Pros

Whenever a customer needs help and asks any one of the staff that member will give 100% effort towards helping them. Whether it is checking for stock on the shelves, finding stock that has moved, looking in the warehouse, phoning another store or just asking a member of management the staff in musselburgh are willing to do what it takes to help. In store team is fantastic and second to none. It is full of support for one another and we look to provide the best for our staff I feel the store has a welcoming personality and fully believe it is the reason for a majority of our regulars choosing our store as the main place to shop over other on the high street. Till staff are generally praised by customers for their helpful and friendly attitude and i feel this should be highlighted even more due to the fact they have continued to get the same praise despite the coronavirus causing issues.

    Cons

Need better communication both in store and throughout the company. More info on rules on how handle covid and exactly what the company finds acceptable Better protection from covid 19 (ie screen protectors that actually fit the tills) The store hasn't changed much from Woolworths 10 or so years ago and could do with atleast a new ceiling. The in store staff keep the place clean and tidy but when the ceiling is leaking and parts of the building are out of date it can be hard not to accept criticism for any mess.

I worked at B&M Retail part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Colleagues Customers 10% discount on everything apart from electrical products. Nice products Decent breaks if you get them. Not all paid for though.

    Cons

Face fits culture Managers on a power trip Don’t follow health and safety guidelines Stock takes twice a year which you are forced to do. Refuse to increase contract when you have been working over your contract hours consecutively for several years

Current Employee - Customer Service Assistant in London, England, England

I have been working at B&M Retail part-time

    Pros

Management willing to give set shifts Assigned aisle allows for consistent work days The pay is ever so slightly over minimum wage so woohoo I guess

    Cons

Management like to hide away in back offices, have gone 4 days without seeing management Smoke breaks shouldn't be allowed and are consistently abused High staff turnover, management included Management seemingly don't communicate with eachother always giving different instructions Reluctance to confront staff about poor work practices IE; staff putting stock in wrong places or in high volumes resulting in management asking for other staff to fix the problems Multiple people work same aisle resulting in stock being randomly places sometimes Staff are constantly asked to work alone and lift things which require at least 2 people to lift safely The tap water is signed up as unable to drink Reluctance to write off bottled water staff use during a heat wave Rules are bent to allow the more "in-clique" group to do things that would otherwise be unacceptable Some members of management aren't on staffs side and will just agree with customers and moan about staff to other staff

I worked at B&M Retail part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Not many I can think of to be honest.

    Cons

I worked for the business for 3 years, 2 years being on £4.05-£4.20 hr which is was absolutely ridiculous. The management system is all over the place, I have 4 manager's and all of them were terrible.
