BCAA is Famous for SAYING the Right Thing

Jul 24, 2021 - Manager in Burnaby, BC

      Pros

You get a $100 gift voucher the day before the employee engagement survey request lands in your e-mail. If you have attendance issues this is the place for you! We have team members that miss 30+ days year after year with no consequences. Senior leadership coach us to ignore chronic absenteeism. As a front line employee, if you keep it together through probation ,you can then basically get a month off with pay over and above your annual vacation allotment. The only impact is a "coaching" session where you commit to doing better, then repeat, repeat, repeat...

      Cons

Senior and Executive leadership in the operations division is a diversity free zone. Overwhelmingly Caucasian, they don't reflect the cultural makeup of our community or front line employees (very similar to our Board). Everyone in ET/ST is very long time BCAA with little or no external work experience. Outsiders with broad experience and education don't last long, we churn through them very quickly. Of course we'll say all the right things, for example we will acknowledge first peoples and traditional territory; however, there is no substance behind it, no outreach, little to no representation in our work force. Of course we say the right thing.

Very flexible, but annoying during tough weather

      Pros

The management is very lenient and flexible towards employees' schedules. Always able to book off time so long as its at least 1-2 weeks in advance and even if not, management will tend to accommodate now and then. The actual work is also quite easy to learn and do.

      Cons

They operate "rain or shine", meaning if its raining or if its 40 degrees out, the work still needs to be done. Since you're working outdoors, you will get dirty.

      Pros

Feels like extended family, they really listen. Everyone seems to really care about each other. Some exciting things are happening with a business transformation to digitize the member experience. Leadership training, career growth, great pay and benefits. I feel proud to tell my friends I work here.

      Cons

Can't think of anything to add right now. Please continue to keep up the good work.

      Dead-End Career

      Jul 1, 2021 - Insurance Advisor

      Pros

      - Friendly co-workers - High pension contributions matched by the company - Extensive training - Clean and tidy work environment

      Cons

      - No flexibility or control over your own time for the 8 hour shift - Compensation is low considering the kind of work you're expected to put in for the day - This job is very stressful if you are conflict avoidant - Expecting two days off in a row each week is too much to ask as an insurance advisor despite most of BCAA's employees getting weekends off who do not work in the service locations - Compensation will max out within 4 years and will make you consider looking elsewhere to find a higher paying job or a less stressful job - Personal success is often overlooked or minimized when acknowledged - Individual achievements do not translate into better pay - Disconnect vertically between upper management mid-management and staff - Disconnect horizontally across departments

      Pros

Great team and management, lots opportunities to grow up, could easily relocate to another branch if moved, have commissions and bonus, great benefits, no everything shifts, closed on Sundays.

      Cons

Have to do performance review every month when you are under probation, then every quarter for regular employees. The performance review report include so many parts too much detailed
