I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The culture is decent, and can improve upon it by hiring more people of color.

    Cons

As a former member of the admin support team, the group needs better support from upper management and from HR in regards to handling conflict amongst one another and amongst the professional staff (Tax and Audit people). Admin support also needs better wages and better raises. Also, it should not be required for Admin support to complete performance reviews or to set goals, especially if there isn't a position... above their current role that they can work towards (and especially if there are no positions being created for admin support can be promoted to).

    Advice to Management

Management should do a better job on growing the skills of the admin support group so that they feel they're part of the office, offer or pay for classes (like MS Office certification classes, or pay for some admins to be certified notary public/signing agents since they NEED those types of people there already). Also, get rid of people (in all departments and management levels) who either cause problems or are... mediocre employees. If different people complain about the same troublemaker for years on end, then get rid of the troublemaker before you lose quality employees.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They try to build camaraderie between coworkers and I've met many wonderful people Definitely able to advance within the office Many industries available to be worked on, depending on the office you're in

    Cons

Busy season hours can be a real drag Pay could be better High turnover is real and will have an effect on your workload High, reliable performers often end up having to work more than others and there doesn't seem to be a ton of recourse for slacking off

    Advice to Management

Work better at retaining who you have. It's easier to keep what you have than keep having to retrain and restart with a bunch of newbies and castoffs from other firms. Increase pay a little. Don't boast to everybody about record bumps in revenue and then give people only a 4-6% bump when they get promoted. That's why everybody leaves for the greener grass of industry. It's actually greener and with less hours!

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The staff is very friendly, and they give you lots of work that goes beyond data entry.

    Cons

There needs to be more structure to the intern program, and have a staff member in charge who introduces them, and mentors them throughout the process.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They cultivate a work hard play hard mentality. Lots of social outings to help you get to know your coworkers. Solid on the job training. Management listens to feedback, but you have to give it.

    Cons

Be ready for long hours typical of a large accounting firm.

    Advice to Management

You've got a great culture. Please continue to hire accordingly.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There's career advancement from associate to senior level. Good experience if you are a starting professional.

    Cons

BDO doesn't care about its people. They only care about meeting the numbers which means enslaving their employees to keep the bosses happy. The managers and partners rarely show up on client sites and supervise their staff. You will work long hours starting from October - April depending on year-end clients, and bosses still won't be happy about your performance. On top of that, there's ZERO supervision from... management and ZERO communication about expectations. There is lack of diversity, work and life balance, and supervision. The company is at lower scale when it comes to its social culture. The environment is toxic and higher-ups have the "Who's the boss here?" attitude. No room for growth here unless your only goal in life is to make your bosses 100% happy. New staff only receive online training, and they have a buddy system and career advisement that doesn't really mean anything. Staff are overworked with no say to management. If you are reading this and thinking about applying to BDO, please SAVE yourself. It is NOT worth it.

    Advice to Management

"People first" slogan should be changed to "Money first". There's a high employee turnover and if this is a concern , BDO should start working on management's tone and company's core values.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Benefits are fantastic, except 401k and they are extremely cheap. Many opportunities to move in the company.

    Cons

Really depends on office, there was a switch in managing partners in my location and that flipped everything upside down. Not to mention my mentor was too busy to help me.

    Advice to Management

Do whatever you want, you will anyway.
