    Pros

I frequently look back to the excitement of being a Senior Manager at BDO. Incredible opportunity; challenging and highly enjoyable given the consistently sharp staff and partners

    Cons

A lot of hours but goal driven teamwork approach makes it almost unnoticeable

"I was micromanaged out of the East Region Transfer Pricing Group."

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Other groups at BDO besides Transfer Pricing appear to be relatively functional. If I had been able to join any other group, or any transfer pricing group outside the East region, I might have formed a very different opinion.

    Cons

Imagine that every time you get on a phone call with a client, your manager gets on the internal instant messaging system and tells you what to say. Imagine that your manager tried to persuade you that when this happened, you were "leading the call." Imagine receiving detailed monthly emails explaining to you how to set up Outlook appointments. Imagine having your career adviser tell you that in spite of 10+ years of professional education, your job was to act as a "secretary" to your manager. Imagine upsetting your manager because you asked for his opinion, only to have him tell you later that you need to ask for his opinion. That was BDO for me--in that one transfer pricing group.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good in training for business development skillsets.

    Cons

    - Partners to not know how to audit. Every test is an inefficient test of details. - Very office-centric type engagement economics. There is no visibility to other offices in the South Florida area. - No room to grow. For example, there has been no partner promotion in over 10 years, and they a good amount of seniors who should be manager, and are not. - Leadership only looks out for themselves, and has no plans on growing the practice. - They do not grow organically, only through acquisitions. The recent acquisition was handled poorly, as seen through the resignations from the acquired firm. - National office looks down on the South Florida practice, as the partners clearly do not stay up to date with the latest auditing/accounting literature. - Partners would rather over test than perform an educated audit test that can show efficiencies and effectiveness in achieving the audit objective. - Partners are critical about everyone else, except their own performance. They take no accountability.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits are good, i.e. Health Insurance, and 401K match. Co-workers are pleasant. Flexible work environment with ability to work remotely. However senior management expects employees to work and be available during PTO

    Cons

Staff turnover and morale is abysmal. Micro managed. Little diversity in staff. Majority of partners are white males over 40. Partners are always pushing for better yield, productivity and realization. Cronyism and favoritism are rampant. If you are making your partner look good you are the “chosen one of the day”. Hours goal is unrealistic, minimum of 2600 hours per year required. No work life balance. Management expects employees to work 24/7 and schedule your life around your work. Have always had PTO interrupted by partner needing “just one thing” that usually eats at least one day of my week long PTO. PTO carryover recently reduced by 40%. Not provided with cutting edge or even useable software. Systems are mostly canned software without flexibility and are clunky. Ability to service clients is a constant struggle and frustration. Would not recommend to experienced talent, that know how to truly service clients, okay place for interns and first few years out of college for experience.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great marketing has created a widely recognized brand.

    Cons

Acquisition of other firms binge has been poorly managed. Culture diluted, new people not integrated properly. Pretend to have a culture with people first when they treat their own people very poorly. Acquisitions of other practice areas have been allowed to continue with pre-BDO upper management, systems, policies and procedures that are not consistent with the rest of the firm and this group of people are in way over their heads.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Learned a lot as I had multiple, diverse clients with varied needs.. Management gives lots of opportunity if you want it. Long hours with lots of pressure but flexible schedule.

    Cons

Reputation as a third rate company. PwC and the other big firms look down their noses at BDO. Managed out a sense of desperation to land new business. Very reactive, not proactive.
