I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Other groups at BDO besides Transfer Pricing appear to be relatively functional. If I had been able to join any other group, or any transfer pricing group outside the East region, I might have formed a very different opinion.

    Cons

Imagine that every time you get on a phone call with a client, your manager gets on the internal instant messaging system and tells you what to say. Imagine that your manager tried to persuade you that when this happened, you were "leading the call." Imagine receiving detailed monthly emails explaining to you how to set up Outlook appointments. Imagine having your career adviser tell you that in spite of 10+ years...

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good in training for business development skillsets.

    Cons

    - Partners to not know how to audit. Every test is an inefficient test of details. - Very office-centric type engagement economics. There is no visibility to other offices in the South Florida area. - No room to grow. For example, there has been no partner promotion in over 10 years, and they a good amount of seniors who should be manager, and are not. - Leadership only looks out for themselves, and has no plans...

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits are good, i.e. Health Insurance, and 401K match. Co-workers are pleasant. Flexible work environment with ability to work remotely. However senior management expects employees to work and be available during PTO

    Cons

Staff turnover and morale is abysmal. Micro managed. Little diversity in staff. Majority of partners are white males over 40. Partners are always pushing for better yield, productivity and realization. Cronyism and favoritism are rampant. If you are making your partner look good you are the “chosen one of the day”. Hours goal is unrealistic, minimum of 2600 hours per year required. No work life balance. Management expects...

    Advice to Management

Truly listen and work with staff. Provide solutions to allow staff to meet client expectations. Stop being dogmatic, try being collaborative. Provide real technology solutions for staff, not technology that we “need” to make work.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great marketing has created a widely recognized brand.

    Cons

Acquisition of other firms binge has been poorly managed. Culture diluted, new people not integrated properly. Pretend to have a culture with people first when they treat their own people very poorly. Acquisitions of other practice areas have been allowed to continue with pre-BDO upper management, systems, policies and procedures that are not consistent with the rest of the firm and this group of people are in way...

    Advice to Management

Prepare for ongoing poor performance of various specialty groups and a return to small regional practices that they were pre-BDO. Blown opportunities are gone and will likely never return. Continued small firm thinking will present this firm from ever being a real alternative to the Big Firms. Creating additional layers of regional management will prove to be costly and the cause of discontent amongst the partner group....

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Learned a lot as I had multiple, diverse clients with varied needs.. Management gives lots of opportunity if you want it. Long hours with lots of pressure but flexible schedule.

    Cons

Reputation as a third rate company. PwC and the other big firms look down their noses at BDO. Managed out a sense of desperation to land new business. Very reactive, not proactive.

    Advice to Management

    Treat managers with respect.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent benefits, some partners are very supportive and always available, excellent clients and work

    Cons

Family feel was destroyed with merger, upper management still has its cliques, over 20 partners/managing directors "left" since the merger, revenue has dropped over 30 percent, several partners are counting days until they can leave, high turnover, senior managers and directors are salesmen (if you can build a book of business or can get close to the clique you have success in Houston)

    Advice to Management

Although national preaches standardization, you will have to learn quickly whcih corners you can cut (i.e. just get close to the clique)

    Cons

The quality of interns has gone down since B4 has upped their game.

    Advice to Management

Only 8's or above should get interviews.
