I have been working at Babylon Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Will try to be as neutral as possbile and skip the Cons part and write everything up here. Criteria I will use: Mission, People, Culture, Management, Product, Company Outlook - Mission: without a doubt amazing - People: I'd say lower average bound. Worked with a few really smart engineers, but a lot are just bad/incopetent/slow/unmotivated/political (yes political engineers..) - Culture: relaxed, but I guess depends on the team you're in and how high up in the ranks you exist. Working hour wise, again depends on the team, but really anything goes. I've seen people doing 9-4.30pm without any complaints and those people weren't great performers either - Management: again, depends.. I've seen both, good and bad. I have seen some tech leads that should have been junior/senior engineers and of course the other way around. Same with engineering managers and engineering directors. - Product: I am a bit more opinionated on this topic. I think if all the products were spun up to separate startups only GP at hand would survive, everything else is just not working. Having said that the product suite overall has potential to be great, as it does collect data about your health journey in various stages, ie data collected when you're healthy (health check, monitor), data collected when you're sick (AI, GP at hand) , and with all this data better diagnostics and healthier lifestyle decisions can be made - Company Outlook: this is where I'm the most sceptical. I think Babylon has a valuation of a tech company (it raised 500mln recently) and is valued ~2bn. I would argue that it's not a tech company. First of all, the only product that is great (in my opinion) is GP at hand, which has a high cost base (doctors, support, engineers to support the system), AI/ML stuff just does not work, even though there are smart people working on this. Let's be honest, GP at hand is nothing new - it has been around in the US for some time, it does not change the healthcare experience much (you can get an appointment quicker, but the doctor consultation is also much more limited) thus there's nothing really exciting about the tech. So what we have is a great mission, average people, average culture, average management, weak product and hard times ahead. I cannot be anything, but sceptical about the future of the company. I hope it succeeds because the world needs a better/integrated health care system, will that be Babylon? Time will tell.

I have been working at Babylon Health full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great team and lots of smart people - Amazing mission. We are here for the big prize - Lot of freedom to decide what to work on - Management empowers you to do your best - Management care a lot a about the wellbeing of the team, truly. This is the first time ever my manager asked me how I was coping with work-life balance. They truly care. - Challenging environment that never gets boring - One very important one at the moment. In the middle of this pandemic there is no industry more secure than healthcare, plus you are almost in the frontline of the fight. Your contribution matters - Working flexibility on where to work from

    Cons

    - Challenging industry with lots of regulatory requirements - Sometimes there are too many processes - Usual growing pains of a startup

    Pros

Some really smart people working in the UK office Great mission and benefits Office is really cool

    Cons

If you disagree with the CEO you are instantly sacked. Disastrous platform change for React Native caused talent exodus in product and engineering Terrible recent hires from Uber and Amazon- they have no clue about healthcare. arrogant, disrespectful and unprofessional senior product leadership, with loads of micromanagement. Complete lack of product strategy and reorgs happening every 4 months HR = useless No career progression

I worked at Babylon Health for more than a year

    Pros

    - Had a really good iOS team which has gradually lost a ton of people - All the leads have left and some smart people furloughed - There are some Tribes/Feature teams which are really nice to work in.

    Cons

    - All the bad reviews on here are 100% legit. - The management blames everyone but themselves for the lack of direction of the company. Objectives keep changing, projects keep getting shelved and new ideas pursued with little thought or data to back it. - The way the company reacted to external/internal criticism on unethical practices was borderline illegal. - The CEO has a bit of "Steve Jobs" like reality distortion field with zero ability to clearly put his ideas into an executable plan. He surrounds himself with "Yes" men/women. There is a clear lack of trust between the employees at large and this senior management. - The iOS team specifically was kept in the dark about React Native experiments and obviously the team was not too happy.

I worked at Babylon Health full-time

    Pros

I don't know what to say. There were some nice people, some interesting people. There were a handful of talented and smart people, but only a handful. Great mission.

    Cons

I'll just say having read through the other reviews, I haven't found any cons I disagree with. Toxic culture, broken promises, poor leadership, no plan or organization, managers that are even worse that the leaders, bad tech, so much money but they don't invest in their employees, plus all of that money is oil money, the mission is just for show, any good people that I met left or were laid off, stock options are a joke.

I have been working at Babylon Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Get to meet alot of good and smart people, especially the engineering team. Unfortunately lots of them left since late last year and are continuing to leave.

    Cons

In this company, profits come first. It's OK that product is still in development and half-baked, just launch it first. Any concerns you have over stability & performance will be dismissed to facilitate quick to market. After that, you get blamed for these issues, and the persons who dismissed your concerns get promoted to Lead role for "streamlining" processes making processes "slicker". A complete farce. Public is distrustful of the product and the company, thanks to these process-streamlining-expert-lead. The negative highly unprofessional PR stunt makes thing worse.

    Babylon Health Response

May 2, 2020People and Performance Team

Thank you for your review and positive feedback for our Engineering team. Over the past two months, Babylon has carried out the vital process of reviewing our engineering platform, technology tribe structure and general capabilities to ensure the product is more scalable and to support long-term global delivery. The COVID-19 crisis has obviously also had a huge impact on both our clients’ needs and delivery requirements, and we have had to review our structures to reflect our short-term delivery needs. This work resulted in around 5% of our workforce being furloughed in the UK as they were not critical to current delivery while others have left the business as they fell outside of the scope of our renewed longer-term focus. During those same two months, we have seen a resultant upturn in the number of negative reviews, with March and April now representing nearly 50% of the total reviews Babylon has received in its six years history on Glassdoor. Within Babylon we have a strong safety culture across our engineering, product and clinical operations teams, and closely monitor all aspects of safety, so that we comply with best practice in all areas. We don’t just rely on our internal processes; we are audited, inspected and reported on by numerous external bodies, and we score highly, i.e. the recent report by the CQC in which we were rated outstanding for being well-led. None of our products get released without passing safety testing, that is done every time, whether it be for the release of a brand-new product or a minor feature change. Safety approval is required for all changes in the live product. At Babylon, we really value our open and collaborative culture and carry out a survey among our two thousand employees every two weeks anonymously using an independent platform, collecting thousands of data points to assess the true feelings of Babylonian across many different subjects. Our survey shows when asked, ‘How likely is it you would recommend Babylon as a place to work?’, 71% scored 7 or more out of 10.

I have been working at Babylon Health full-time

    Pros

Company mission is usually what pulls people in. Met some smart people here.

    Cons

Very disorganized. Certain leads are shockingly rude and condescending. They don't seem to know how to treat people with hard skills that actually add value (which they lack themselves). The organization is much larger in size than it needs to be to meet business goals and that creates a lot of disconnect and inefficiency. Not a good experience.
