      Non existing work life balance

5 Jun 2021 - Finace Manager in London, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

None. I did not have a positive experience with Baringa.

      Cons

The most horrible work life balance ever. And I worked for two big 4 firms previously. Non existance of any proper symptoms. Imagine being an accountant and having a system that allows one sided entry. Totally against the fundamental of debit credit. Managing partners simply do not care about back office and support staff. We are treated like 3rd class citizens. Simply horrible

      Like a glove?

      Pros

Baringa is full of positive energy and can-do attitude. The workforce is young, dynamic and keen. This is a company that could grow to a large company, and does indeed have those aspirations The management ask for input, and seem to really care, and they are really desperate to make sure you fit in...

      Cons

High on Baringa's agenda is making sure you fit their mould. They are big fans of "letting you have your say" but ultimately if you disagree with the management diktat then they will find some clever words to force their perspective. Also high on the agenda is forced fun. Be prepared (again) to fit in, or die trying. Whilst summer parties, picnics and free lunches sound great on paper, socialising with 500 identikit consultants wears thin. Very quickly. Baringa's partners and employees are well meaning, they just don't really understand different points of view. The work life balance here is awful, and at times for no good reason. Be prepared for six month solo assignments in a far flung English towns with little to no support. You have been warned!

      Baringa Partners Response

      Partner and People Lead

As the Partner responsible for our People agenda at Baringa, I can confirm that I’ve never ridden a horse, let alone owned one, and went to the local comprehensive school. It is our belief that the vast majority of people at Baringa are having a lot of fun building a genuinely different consulting business; the recent external validation for this approach was winning Number 1 spot at the UK Great Places to Work awards and it was really encouraging to understand that people outside the firm believe that we are getting a lot of things right. Despite this validation, we welcome all input, including your comments, and we are determined not to rest on our laurels – we strive, and I mean strive, to improve every year and give everyone at Baringa the best experience and opportunity we can. I would fundamentally disagree that Baringa wants ‘everyone to fit a mould’. We are, of course, committed to the values and behaviours that underpin our company and culture, but continue to attract diverse talent (in the fullest sense) and create an environment where people can be true to themselves. The feedback from our events is overwhelmingly positive, and our employees continue to shape how we spend time with each other, network, celebrate success and of course have fun, which is something we are not ashamed of. Above all, we continue to ensure there is something for everyone. The Baringa atmosphere, community and culture remains at the heart of our decision-making and is at the centre of our strategy . We believe we have a unique heritage, a unique Partnership model and an enormous amount of talent throughout the firm, elements that when combined produce an environment that gives our people a great opportunity to develop themselves and take our firm forward. Above all else, Baringa remains proud of its entrepreneurial spirit and giving people the chance to write their own story – the growth in our business is not a strategy, it’s an outcome of the talent we have within the firm and their desire to take new capabilities to clients, branch into new industries or work in other geographies. Our hierarchy remains flat and our leadership listens to ideas from people across the company, in fact it’s a constant reflection for us that our best ideas have come from individuals within our business rather than the leadership – this approach has enabled us to achieve what we have and remain close to everyone in the firm, and we don’t see ourselves changing.

Excellent client delivery and a unique culture makes for a perfect partnership

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Wonderful balance between delivering an excellent client experience and a unique (and very collegiate) culture. With very little bureaucracy and an approachable leadership team, it creates a company that can maximize its time spent on the things that really matter. Known for its talent & culture, the working environment is both highly engaging as well as having a real fun element to it. The collective Baringa community puts in a lot of effort to ensure that the term 'company benefits' goes wider that simply pay + bonus...Company events for example are something that Baringa invest heavily in, making them truly unforgettable and seen as the high point of the year...also as they always include +1's and children, everyone really gets to know each other, making it less of an organisation and more of a family. All this sounds like Baringa is still a very small company, and that's the best bit...it's not...Baringa are now 500+ people, a healthy independent partnership, £100m+ revenue, with double digit growth each year...that combination is almost unique in the consulting industry, meaning not only is the culture amazing, the economics work and it's sustainable too!

      Cons

No real cons to call out specifically, however it's still a Consultancy and therefore travel and work life balance are always a consideration for potential new joiners - Baringa works hard to ensure this is a healthy balance, plus with the Leadership Teams & Partners being very approachable, no problem is unsolvable.

      Pros

Lives its promises and values. Still growing strong and managing to hold onto the plot.

      Cons

Least worst at work-life balance. An industry issue dealt with (sort of) at Baringa.

      Not what you expect

28 Nov 2017 - Manager in London, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Lots of young, ambitious and collaborative people

      Cons

You are brainwashed every day about “Baringa culture” and how great the company is. You either fit or you must pretend to fit, there is no way to get time for yourself; this kind of "introverted" behaviour raises eyebrows. Projects are usually short (10 weeks) and understaffed (somehow Baringa needs to be competitive against the big guys) so you end up working by yourself in random locations & definitely not on the most intellectually challenging tasks. There is a lot of talk around senior management listening and trying to improve working conditions but actually it reminds me of George Orwell's "doublethink": they can tell you they care about work/life balance but actually do nothing about it and set a terrible example themselves. Most of us joined because of the glassdoor reviews but what we found is quite different from what we expected. As the company expands I expect more and more reviews like this to be posted. Consider yourself warned.

      Partner and People Lead

I am genuinely saddened to read this review and hear that you feel this way. I would ask that you please come forward and speak to me individually and confidentially; I’d like to understand your frustrations in more detail and work with you on a way forward – we don’t want anyone at Baringa to feel how you feel.
