    Pros

Great, medium-size organization. Top-notch immunology research, including many auto-immune diseases.

    Cons

Only gripe is that Benaroya employees (who are affiliates of Virginia Mason Hospital) don't get a 15% discount at the Virginia Mason cafeteria.

Helpdesk can get caught between users and IT sometimes.

I have been working at Benaroya Research Institute At Virginia Mason full-time

    Pros

Friendly, collaborative environment where scientists genuinely care about making progress toward helping people with immune-mediated disease. Collaborations internally between labs and externally between other institutes, universities, and biotechs. Excellent funding environment.

    Cons

Too many exciting projects to work on. Not very many good lunch restaurants nearby. Near downtown, so commute traffic is bad, but easy access to public transport.

    Advice to Management

Would love to see more research on the microbiome and a bigger systems immunology department. Seminar series, journal clubs, and invited speakers are great- keep up the good work.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Cutting-edge research; great scientific staff; good environment and learning experience for students, postdocs and interns.

    Cons

CEO and his assistant like to wield power resulting in high turnover rate and animosity when having to deal with them. Business Administration has archaic practices (e.g. carbon copy PO's, paper submission expense reports, loose accounting).

    Advice to Management

Root cause analysis of high turnover rate under CEO's departments; clear definition on who you actually report to; accountability for workplace bullying.

    Pros

Very good departmental leadership. Upward mobility for high performers. Good Bonuses/benefits.

    Cons

Pay is below average because of nonprofit status.

    Advice to Management

Develop better systems to terminate employees that don't perform.
