Pros

Besides typical state job benefits, the location is nice, and has a great cafeteria.

Cons

Most units are totally dysfunctional due to bad management, high-school politics, and poorly-functioning bureaucratic methodology. Catty coworkers, extreme workloads, and mismanagement everywhere. Do NOT try to be a forward-thinking, intelligent employee, because middle-management will feel threatened by it. You'll be promised promotions in order to keep you working hard, but these magical promotions will never occur due to supposed "Backlogs in paperwork in HR." Non-stop drama and frustrations, and employees are not given the tools and power to get their jobs done well and efficiently. Management then tries to keep moral up by having constant potlucks, which only helps improve morale for a few hours. I watched MANY people quit out of frustration, workplace harassment issues, and general unhappiness. Many left for other state departments, and told me that things ran much better at the new department. Some of us were so burnt out on this department that we left the state system completely. Oh, and the head of the department doesn't believe in using the Oxford comma.

Pros

Somewhat flexible schedule, some co-workers are decent, potential to help those in need and get rid of bad apples, job security.

Cons

Crushing workload, dysfunctional system, heartbreaking cases, bureaucracy. You're constantly exposed to the dregs of society and the mistreatment of children. Mind-numbing, energy-draining, miserable.

Pros

Meeting interesting colleagues where you can develop relationships outside of work.

Cons

You can be the hardest worker, the best employee in terms of production, and have the most experience; but all that will not get you recognition. What will get you recognition with management, is sucking up to them as much as possible. If you are a friend of the manager, you will not have to do as much works as others, you will be put on "special projects", and you will rise up faster. You can pretty much see how this changes the foundation of a department. Its easy to see why the State has no money and the infrastructure is 40 years oudated! Deadlines are unrealistic at my specific bureau and the top staff could care less about about your well being. Office politics is so strong here that its hard to trust anyone. Don't ever try to speak up the managers either, you will just paint a target on your back and you won't be able to do anything about it.
