A company with absolutely no ethics or work-life balance

      1 Jan 2021 - Editor in Mumbai

      Pros

Honestly, the only pro is working from home.

      Cons

      1. There is absolutely no work-life balance. You are expected to finish lots of work under strict deadlines which compromises your quality of work. You then get penalized because of this low-quality. 2. They have unrealistic standards of expectation and expect you to work in the way they want you to. For example, as an editor, in case I use the term 'compared to', they flag it as wrong and tell me to change it to 'than'. Both the words have the same meaning, and fit well in the sentence, trust me. They have ridiculously high standards of expectations with can have a toll on your mental health....so beware. 3. ALSO, most of their editors are NOT native English speakers, but Indians. They have two different websites: 'Cactus' which is the Indian version, and 'Editage' which is the International version. Clients submit their documents through Editage expecting native speakers would be editing their documents. And hence, most of the papers you edit will not even give credit to you simply because your name could easily give away the fact you are not a native speaker. This is hypocrisy at its worst. Definitely a money-minded organization with no ethics or values.

Not worth the complete lack of work/life balance

      Pros

The training program offered here is intensive, and if you actually get through the training program, the client-facing work is also grueling. This provides a great learning experience and truly raises the bar for perfection. As a result of these high standards, your quality of work also naturally becomes a lot higher by default. They also have a steady, formalized growth curve within the company.

      Cons

      1. The way Cactus operates is almost unrealistic. The company package looks brilliant on paper - the great benefits, the office, the 'cool' corporate parties and events, and the free food. None of this actually makes up for the complete lack of work-life balance the company offers though, because there really is no time to actually enjoy the benefits! They pride themselves on being open 365 days in a year at the cost of their employees' days off. 2. The internal and client deadlines are extremely tight, and often times you are expected to be available and working almost 11h a day consistently. They claim to only expect you to work 8h, but practically, those 8h that are scheduled for you don't even include a MINUTE's break. Essentially, you are glued to your seat for almost 8-9h a day working NON-stop, not including things like calls or meetings. The number of days I haven't even had a couple minutes for lunch are too many to count. 3. You are expected to work on their timings - they basically decide when you are free 24/7. There is not a single day that you can plan in advance for an evening social event in your personal life. This really affected my mental and physical health, due to lack of a social life and no time for any physical activity

      Pros

Peers. The best. Cactus 3 years ago. The best. Management 3 years ago. Good.

      Cons

Leadership. No bigger con than cactus's leadership. I don't know if it applies to all branches of cactus, but surely does to medical communications/life sciences. Work life balance was always bad. Cactus sells itself on the flexibility to work from home, but honestly, its no good to the employee. Cactus tends to glorify overworking and those who work decent hours are tagged bad employees. I always had a massive workload and worked without pause but that's not my con. It's not my complain for cactus. For me, things only got bad when there was a major structure change. A lady known for her toxic management style was given charge of the organisation. She previously was incharge of a sub division but her horror stories was infamous throughout. I was happy I never had to work her, but come 2020, everything moved under her. I don't think she holds anyone is good regard. She would sweet talk and then brutally murder people's work ethics/working style/work behind their backs. More than 75% of my team resigned under her. But everyone feared to complain against her, given she has a terrible way of talking about people. This is a niche market and none of us want to ruin our reputation. Even if people have complained against her to HR, HR cannot help. She holds too much power, so I don't blame them. She micro manages and it's her way or the highway. even her peers also tend to steer clear of her, because she is in good terms with the company's president. No longer are opinions heard/valued in the organisation. People tread with fear and the 25% who still remain in the company, it's only because they're still hunting for the next opportunity
