Very disappointing, don't be fooled by its fake reputation

Feb 11, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Cambridge, England

      Pros

      - Free breakfast and lunch - Free beer and drinks on Thu and Fri - Some very intelligent and decent colleagues

      Cons

      - One of the worst things in this company is the “internal market” system, meaning that you have to find projects through your network of people (biz devs and project managers). In a way it’s nice because you can choose your project, but often (probably because some teams are having less and less projects) you are desperate to find next projects, competing against your team members. This is driving selfish behaviours such as hiding your pipeline projects, and not sharing your skills and knowledge with other team members. Back-stabbing and throwing colleagues under the bus is commonplace. Naturally, a team has a hostile working environment particularly when the team has little projects and/or the team leader is incompetent. Methodologies and skills belong to individuals, and are not accumulated in a team/ company. It therefore does not give opportunities for new joiners to learn and grow. Particularly if you are a graduate, you will be disappointed with the lack of learning opportunities - Team leaders are often the ones who managed to climb the greasy pole by strategizing internal politics. That’s OK, but they absolutely lack abilities to lead. They are busy managing upwards ant not downwards. They cannot spot bullying because they stay in their own cubicles, hesitate to give TOILs because they want to keep the team’s billability higher, focus on weekly team billability without a long term vision, etc. Uninspiring - The senior people, who have only ever worked at CC, confuse confidence with arrogance, which is making them blind and ignorant of the world outside of Cambridge Science Park. One of their consulting teams even declares that they are the McKinsey of technology innovation – at least CC people have a great sense of humour. They sell projects in areas such as strategy, manufacturing etc, in which they have next to zero capabilities or knowledge - not fair for clients. A PhD in engineering /science does not make you an expert in every industrial arena - There is a lack of diversity – in my division 90% of the employees was men

      Great benefits, good people

      Pros

Free breakfast and free lunch! Varied work and incredibly experienced people to work with. 37 hour work weeks with no expectation to go over.

      Cons

There are times when there's a lot of project work and times when there's minimal project work, generally speaking for the whole company. During those times of minimal project work, it can be frustrating. It's just the nature of the company. It does, however, give time for improving one's own skills through training.

      Political and demotivating

      Dec 22, 2019 - Senior Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

There are some brilliant people who are willing to help out. The work is varied and some good benefits such as free breakfast and lunch.

      Cons

There is a disconnect on what the senior management say about their values and how the project and line management behave. There is a culture that encourages deception as a management technique and bullying as a way to get what they want. When someone leaves due to disagreement or is fired an email is sent company wide with their photo to let everyone know.

Type of work you get can sometimes be very stale, depending on what projects sell.

      Excellent place to work

Apr 11, 2019 - Mechanical Engineer in Cambridge, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Huge range of projects (diagnostics, synthetic biology, drug delivery, surgical) Role seems to be tailored to what you do best; people with the same job title can do very different things on a day to day basis (e.g. mechanical design, CAD, design for manufacture, tolerance analysis, FEA, data analysis, testing, sales work or most importantly for me, a mixture of all of the above) If you're not sure what you want to do, the large number of projects will help you find out Free breakfast, lunch and fruit, access to 3D printers Excellent training opportunities One of the best paying mechanical engineering jobs outside of Oil & Gas Annual pay rise seems decent.

      Cons

When there aren't as many ongoing projects, you may have to work on projects that don't interest you as much. New starters may struggle to get onto projects (especially in slow periods) as colleagues and project managers won't know your skillset. This "internal marketplace" means that you should get to know as many people in the company as possible so you hear about opportunities before they're taken. If you don't enjoy doing this sort of thing, you'll be very dependant on your line manager, who can be very busy with other engineers in similar situations. Luckily, the company has only had a couple of slow periods in my (short) time at the company, so this hasn't been a huge problem yet.

Love the Company. Not perfect, but the closest I've found

      May 30, 2018 - Senior Engineer

      Pros

      - Great people - Great culture of working together to get the job done. - No competitiveness or concept that X gets the promotion meaning that Y and Z miss out; it's a merit-based system - Great benefits (healthcare, free breakfast and lunch for all staff)

      Cons

      - Sometimes you need to put in more than your contractual hours (flip-side: the work is always interesting, so on the weeks I work more than 40 hours it's because I want to, not because I feel I have to)
