I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

Good salaries and benefits, lots of work and opportunities, smart people, plenty of budget.

    Cons

Some pains as transform from traditional bank/credit card company to "Tech Company." Mostly finished the aggressive clean up of legacy employees, but some of it is ongoing. The performance management is the thing that seems to rub the most people the wrong way.

    Advice to Management

    Remove quotas on performance management

I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great colleagues, competitive salary/bonus/benefits, downtown location

    Cons

Frequent and disruptive org changes and leadership changes, some roles (analysts) receive systemic preferential treatment while everyone else is second class, deeply flawed performance management process, only product is a credit card - no innovation or growth

    Advice to Management

You already know the major problems with performance management and your system of ‘meritocracy’. If your desire to attract and retain the brightest Canadian talent was working you wouldn’t need to continually import leaders from the US head office. Start valuing all the smart people you’ve been fortunate enough to cross path with and stop driving them out of the organization.

I worked at Capital One full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

One of the more progressive companies I've worked for. They were open to new ideas and willing to take calculated risks with the business. The Town Hall meetings were informative and it brought the diverse employment base together.

    Cons

Management. The firm has hired good and talented people but SOME are strong in deal making but are NOT strong in managing their staff or are not "people oriented. "

I worked at Capital One full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Unfortunately, I have nothing positive to say.

    Cons

Protectionism of established senior management disguised as "competition" by running a show of hiring and firing. A tall hierarchy of people with no skills. Technological acumen is inversely proportional to the rank in the hierarchy. Absolutely horrible performance management meant to run the show to keep certain blessed individuals in power. No idea of how tech companies are run. Competition with peers promotes unethical...

    Advice to Management

No advice. Get rid of all the management. Rehire people who want to do something.

I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great company undergoing significant changes as they try to become a "FinTech" capable/like bank. Lots of really great folks and very little "deadwood".

    Cons

Meetings...meetings....meetings. Let me say it again. Meetings...meetings...meetings.
