I have been working at EF English First full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I have loved working with the students. EF gives me the opportunity to work with a wide range of ages and abilities. EF also provides wonderful continuing education through in-center and city-wide training, supporting teachers to develop themselves. Many of the 'foreign' teachers (native English speakers living in China or another country with EF schools) have no prior teaching experience, so this gives everyone necessary...

    Cons

This is a business and it is focused on making money. It values educating the students, but mainly in terms of making parents happy, with less interest in the students' long term success. As a career teacher, this can be disheartening. Teachers are only expected to stay for a year or two, so it can be hard to keep forming and maintaining relationships with new co-workers. This also means constantly having to train...

I worked at EF English First full-time for less than a year

      Pros

The salary and benefits are good, and students are eager to learn.

      Cons

Everything is catered to the parents. Teachers are not allowed to run classes efficiently because parents always complain about one thing or another, and the school gives in to them. All they care about is a good performance, not the students actually learning. Especially with summer and winter courses, the teachers are massively overworked and held to unrealistic expectations in terms of lesson delivery and student retention,...

      Advice to Management

Appreciate and listen to your teachers, or you will end up with none. The parents are important, but we are the trained teachers, not them. Trust us to do our jobs, and don't listen to every whim of the parent. I couldn't be more glad to have left this company. My health has greatly improved not being overworked and away from the filthy school.

I worked at EF English First full-time

      Pros

If you’re coming to China for the first time, EF is a great way to get settled into the country. For me, the culture shock was real upon coming into the country so it helped to have the support provided. The two weeks of orientation really helped to just have time to get used to the country, but as far as teaching goes, if you’re quite new, it still felt like being thrown into the deep end for me. You’ll learn and get...

Had to find our own apartments by our third weekend there. It was nice to have 2-3 weeks to do this, but still stressful.

I worked at EF English First full-time for less than a year

      Pros

You will get plenty of classes working with EF. I was teaching 70 classes a week. The lesson plan is good. The pay is good.

      Cons

After working 6 months with EF I was fired. The day that I was fired my lesson plan did not fully loaded up. I left the class and re-entered the class, I hoping the second time I would be able to see the lesson plan. However, this caused me to be 30 seconds late to class. EF was quick to terminate my contract and was unwilling to listen to me. I think they view their employees as disposable .

      Advice to Management

Not to be so quick to fire and respond to your emails about tech problems.

      StarStarStarStarStar
        Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at EF English First

        Pros

Always paid on time Visa’s for arrival sorted well There is a career path within the company for many disciplines (beyond teaching) Some teachers I know at other centres genuinely have had very good experiences (hence why this is 2 stars not one)

        Cons

Every centre is different- some will work an hour less a day but still get paid more Weekend and evening work- working the end of the metro line didn’t help this at all. May be better to see attractions on your day off but May colleagues weekends are staggered. Culture- all about sales- unhappy teachers seen easier to replace with fresh foreigners rather than entice them to stay Pay- terrible compared to many schools....

        Advice to Management

It’s more than just sales! Treat your teachers better and pay them better. Create one rule across the company so there isn’t preferential treatment to some centres Finally and most importantly, use your position of power in the China market to change the stereotypes. The marketing clearly plays into the ‘white teacher’ model and this was clear in my centre. By appearing more diverse in advertising (demo lessons etc)...

I worked at EF English First full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Most of the employees are hard working and really want to make a difference. Some of the academic managers are nice and want to help you develop. Students and parents are friendly and fin, and the facilities are generally well maintained and new.

        Cons

If you come to Guangzhou is is all about politics, they have fired people on maternity leave (moved them to inferior positions) the GM moves people on a whim, decides she doesn't like someone and then gets rid of them. The experience completely depends on manager. If you are foreign you are not respected, the only thing that matters is the CD and making a sale. They don't care about your opinion, your complaints or your...
